So when the grid is shut down I would still have power.

I used to have empathy. I no longer do since they’ve been doing it to themselves.

    Pretty expensive backup.
Different if you are really off grid.

Charging time is falling, miles per charge is increasing, and battery capacity is increasing. Houses and charging stations will probably have a battery backup. Maybe one day the vehicles themselves will have an emergency reserve.

It is difficult to predict what they will do. Many, I would suppose will express anger and blame PG&E instead of those who are actually responsible for their dilemma.

Electric cars and green technologies in general are improving year after year but are still not as good deals as our current infrastructure. But eventually they will be. Also, it will cost a lot to replace our infrustructure and get the economies of scale where scale leads to lower prices.

But even so, their adoption is increasing dramatically:

Solar use is also increasing as well:

Not really, any sensible person keeps a emergency supply of gasoline to run your generator and/or your car.

Kind of reminds me of this quote:

And what if the power goes out when you're not at home? Power outages don't warn you beforehand. Even if you have some gas for a generator, not everyone is a hillbilly with a barn to store supplies.

They are using generators for power, many people, businesses, and others have generators for loss of power, nothing unusual, but certainly has nothing to so with the fire in CA. I am sure they are some in CA in the fire area that have generators themselves.

A friend with a solar system told me when he looked into the battery storage it ran $8,000 + $2,000 installation on top of the panel system. He didn't buy it, the solar was already on the house when he bought it, however when the grid goes down he's in the dark with the rest of his neighbors.

Southern California Edison's net profit between 2011 and 2017 never went below $1 Billion dollars a year.....every year. I find it hard to believe they can't maintain their lines so they don't blow down in the wind. I am beginning to believe they are in Cahoots with the solar folks to push solar power. I drive all over So. Cal and really don't see that many houses with panels. It's a win/win for them to do so. When folks add power to the grid they're compensated about $0.02 to $0.04 cents a kWh Edison in turn resells that for about$0.23 cents a kWh or more.

I have a Tri-Fuel 7500W generator in an enclosure myself. I added a tall exhaust stack with muffler and spark suppressor that points straight up, it cuts down the exhaust note echoing off the surroundings.

I'll buy one when it can go 250 miles on a charge with 4 people, luggage and all the accessories turned on AND has a small gasoline fired generator that can charge the batteries full in 30 minutes or less.

The world being reliable on only fossil fuels is a world doomed in the end. One on hand it's a limited source of power, on the other hand it destroys the ecosystem of the word. You lose either way. The only problem of California is that is hasn't found a solution yet.

You probably won't buy one. Since cars will be self-driving, getting an uber will be very cheap since you won't have to pay a driver. You can uber a small electric car in daily life and uber a bigger one for cross-country trips.

A method for dealing with power outages. Fuel powered vehicles has existed for quite some time now. They convert chemical energy stored in the fuel tank into thermal energy. They don't just wear down batteries.

Electric cars I've been around longer why do you think so few people drive them?

Electric cars still have a ways to go to be as marketable as petrol cars. That is why few people drive them. But they are the future.
