    Not really

    Lots of open cut mines

    Mass automation

    Massive investment in dragline technology

    Living on Asia’s doorstep

    And

Most of the coal is anthracite

However I still would prefer that we use solar

And in the meantime, gas companies in the Mid West are investing in wind and power companies in the Southeast are investing in solar.

The day the world mind the Greenies and converts from coal to LNG all coal producers will take a huge hit! Here in the U.S. the majority if out power plant have been retrofitted to us coal, NG and fuel oil depending of cost.. Other countries like China and Russia now and have been building Power Plants that also can change to suit types of fuel..

It's a simple decision made by cost, right now coal is the cheapest source, and they don't care about emissions!!

That's true I agree. But don't kid yourself, there is a lot of bartering that goes on between exporters and importers politically.. If Japan, N and South Korea and China ever strike a deal with Russia and convert to NG, Australia would be Severely crippled economically.. Consider pipelines are far more economical the Ocean tankers with Russia having the larges NG reserves on the plant, you can bet Australia's trade ministers are stroke'n them folk to buy Australia :)

I despise coal energy. It is a big part of the reasons mercury levels are so high in the waters here in Maine. Pollution from industry west of maine, which is pretty much the rest of the country, blows right over us, dirtying our waters and making our freshwater fish less healthy to eat.
I know we can’t go cold turkey yet on coal, but the sooner it is no longer used for energy, the better.

One big reason Duke Power is going solar is because of the coal ash problem that's polluted the waters in this area several times over the years.

    I hoped you knew.

US coal powered plants are old.. Investors won't be stepping up to build new ones.

Really? I live 20 minutes from the Jim Bridger power plant and quite often hunt that area and fish the man made fresh water lake that used to cools and condense the outgoing steam and I can say I have ever experienced ASH! Then again we have state of the art scrubbers and baffle systems, then again it's only been online SIXTY years so it may be newer then the Duke power plant :)

Why? If we have it, and other countries are willing to pay a private US company for it, who are you or I to tell them otherwise?

    Ever hear of pipelines?

Coal slurry can be moved as easily as Natural Gas thru pipes..

    @Robert E Allen

Years ago there was something called the Texas Railroad Commission.. The name aside, they determined how much oil any company could produce and how much could be exported.

    It predates OPEC..

Thing is, trump is selling the dream: Things CAN be better, things WILL Be better, I will MAKE things better, I will make YOUR America Great again.

Do people buy fantasies? Do the buy the same cigarettes that the Marlboro man smokes? Do they buy outrageously priced athletic shoes that has the name JORDAN on it? Do they buy Rolex’s, or designer clothes? Do they buy Luxury pick up trucks that Seldom (or never) haul anything?

the reality is that people love fantasies.... and trump expertly delivers fantasies that appeal to a lot of people. And, in truth, they prefer the fantasy to the reality.

Of course it's failing, because Clinton didn't need to say anything about coal to lose voters, so who's the imbecile now? Dying a natural death is fine. If the internal combustion engine dies a natural death that is good too.

They are a resource that might be valuable to America some day.

Here is an example the forests of the northwest continue to be ravaged by timber companies but instead of putting thousands of mill workers back to work in saw mills we ship the trees off seas to milling ships where it is milled with cheap workers and sent right back as finished lumber, or our trees are shipped to china for use there. Meanwhile we import tons of finished lumber from Canada..

If we are going to destroy our ecosystems it should at least help more Americans along the way.
