And I heard you loud and clear, countries impose tariffs because they themselves pay them according to you... except for tariffs on the US which they don't pay because the US pays for tariffs on the US and for tariffs by the US. Did I miss any part of this new leftist economic mumbo-jumbo that seems to be very popular in the leftist bubble nowadays? LOL

    Gross or net?
And would you like me to include costs to the consumer in those amounts?

The issue is trump is doing most of this unilaterally. China knows all they have to do is wait him out. Placing these items into bills or trade agreements (as long as the partners honor it and don’t back out like trump has done on several) it will carry much more weight.

Except that if it was the case that would be reflected in high inflation.. . Except that inflation is very very low. Low inflation means that American consumers you so worry about ARE NOT paying more. Which means that 100 billion is coming out of the [exorbitant] profits of China-based manufacturers. Rejoice!

    Simple. Isn't it?

Funny how it used to be that conservatives were convinced that higher costs were passed along.. and so they said that higher corporate taxes (and tariffs) were simply passed along to consumers.

funny how fundamental economic principals can so rapidly change when a new president is elected

generally I agree it is an issue long deferred
And I agree there is lots of blame to go around

but just because the issue shoulda been addresses sooner
Does not mean that the way trump has done it is the ONLY WAY.

realistically, trumps style is to act like a cowboy or a bully... which style frankly offends a lot of people and makes them want to not appear to be submitting to such tactics

btw, you appear to have (correctly). Asserted that trade wars are expensive. While this is true... you seem to be at odds with how trump has presented this undertaking as easy, quick, and an expense that will be born Only by China. Would you agree that trump has misrepresented this issue (regardless of the fact that he is necessarily addressing a long deferred issue) has

And now the "ART OF THE DEAL" is falling thru... Bahahaha, the schmuck was on TV Friday proclaiming a great deal, one of the biggest ever. As if CHina could possibly purchase 40B in one year of farm. That in itself is laughable, and shows what fools we have running this **** house....
Bunch of old white leftovers from Reaganomics, which destroyed the country, now trying to reverse and playing checkers with the Chinese who are playing chess. Trump is a fool !

Obama could have never made a deal. The republicanS on Reagan Era took us over there, gave it all away. Remember "we need cheap goods, it is good for Americans to buy things cheap and save money. PLUS : Now the republicans pretend like BRING IT ALL BACK is their move. The DEMS pleaded with all the people to not let corps go to china FREE of tariffs in the 1980s. The Zionist LAFFER and bro's gave it away. Remember the say : "It is NOT our business to tell a company if they can or cannot go to china, it is their business, we should mind our own business" The dems said :"you will destroy the good paying jobs, union jobs and the industry that is in OUR country, why would you let businesses move over there, and especially free of Tariffs? "

All the think tank schmucks here remember it, it was their job to spin it back then as GOOD FOR YOU... You will get cheap good, save money, plus, why pay union dues when you can keep that money ? Now the same trailer trash that supported it in the 80s cheer for the reversal, their parents made 25 hr. back then and they cant even get 20hr now and want TRUMP to fix it...
    Laughable !

The income made from tariffs, intended to close the trade gap price gouging will pay it back.

the income derived from tariffs that ( ultimately) us consumers pay for via higher prices... That is what is going to pay for these bailouts for farmers?

    btw
Here is a very good analysis of the “stage one” China trade deal

The higher the import tariff the less corporation tax received by the government unless the tariff is passed onto the final consumer

Who pays the tariffs? The importers? Okay. Do they then eat that cost? Nope. They markup the price of their goods and the consumer, the AMERICAN consumer, pays the extra cost.

The only way tariffs make a difference is if you set them so high that they make the already higher priced domestic versions equally comparable. But the problem you run into then is that you've now eliminated the lower cost option for American citizens, many of whom rely on those lower cost items to make ends meet. They then spend less money on other things.

So the same group of folks who hated Obamacare because it increased their health care costs with no benefit to themselves are celebrating Trump for increasing the cost of other goods with no benefit to themselves. Remember, the individual mandate, and the penalties one would incur if they didn't have insurance, were called a tax because it was the government collecting money from you.

What then is a tariff, if all the tariff fees are being funded by the American taxpayer? You now have Trump strutting around slapping himself on the back because the American people gave the Federal government an extra $100 billion dollars buying the same goods they have always bought, only now for an artificially increased cost.

Good job guys! You're really saving us!

I really don't think most of you understand how tariffs work. This is not a slam, but a conversation and understanding about our current situation. Nobody wants trade wars, however; we operate on a global economy. This global economy is NOT "fair market". Industries in all countries are subjected to rules and regulations imposed by their governments that vary by exporter. One of the biggest reasons we lost manufacturing jobs was because our labor laws increased the cost of labor, and thus the cost of goods. Manufacturer's realized that moving production and manufacturing overseas allowed them to increase profit margins by reducing labor costs. Countries like China and Mexico have much lower labor costs, as a function of a lower value economy, and thus these countries saw the greatest growth of manufacturing.

In many cases, the employees manufacturing the products couldn't afford to buy them. Instead, these products were put on cargo ships and sent to countries that could buy them (due to higher wages). Saying that the United States and China compete on equal footing, comparing currency exchange rates, as well as labor requirements, is completely false. There is nothing that is "fair" about the global market. US manufacturers are at a huge disadvantage.

Add to that countries like China intentionally deflating the Yen on the world market. This makes their labor costs to US manufacturers even more appealing. The US saw massive exodus of manufacturing to these countries who were intentionally manipulating their currency in order to entice this development. These countries have also gotten exponentially richer by un-employing US labor.

China is also notorious for stealing trade secrets, imposing on copyright laws, etc. As an example:

The vehicle on the top is the Chinese knockoff of the BMW on the bottom. Apparently, in many of these cases, you can literally move the doors from one car to another and they fit perfectly. We have intellectual property laws in this country for a reason. So... what do we as a country do in a global economy to compete with people and countries so interested in "cheating"?

You can't keep the manufacturing jobs here AND demand high pay. It simply doesn't work. You have to choose one or the other. The intent of Tariffs is to level and un-level playing field that is intentionally disrupted by cheating.

If a manufacturer wants to move their production to China to increase profit margins, while still selling those products back to the people they just laid off... then the government has tools to prevent that from happening. One of those tools is tariffs. Here is an example.

Widget A cost $3.50 in the united states to manufacturer (materials and labor). The company would sell Widget A to wholesalers for $10.50. Wholesalers would then offer it to retailers who would sell it for $12.50.

The company that manufacturers Widget A elects to move all product overseas and to obtain the materials to buy it locally in China. As such, they can now manufacturer the same widget for $1.00. With shipping and import fees, it costs $1.50 to sell back to the United States and with the cost savings they can reduce the cost to $11.50 while still making and additional $1 in profit.

This obviously creates a hardship on Americans. We see manufacturing decrease, high unemployment as more manufacturers do this, and ultimately reduce our economic production.

So... the government imposes Tariffs. They say, "Ok, you want to move your production overseas, but for every widget you bring back to the US to sell, we are imposing a $1 tariff". Well, the "deal" you just had at $11.50 now costs $12.50 because the manufacturer adds the tariff cost to the price of the retail goods. People scream and yell "OMG! These tariffs are costing us more! This hurts US citizens!". What they are too short sighted to see is that:

#1 The government just collected $1 per widget which reduces American's tax liability.

#2 The have disincentivized companies from relocating overseas

#3 The Chinese get mad because we are taking away their manipulation

At the end of the day, we only have a couple of options. Buy cheap imports by a bunch of laid off people, or impose tariffs for the benefits outlined above.

Trump has done a poor job of educating the American people on the trade war and what it will take. He needs to do that and the American populace and businesses need to get behind it. So far, we have some overly greedy Mofo's like Google, Nike, NBA, that have put $ over basic human rights and stopping predatory trade practices..

    It should... don't you agree?

If our government is collecting tariffs in order to level the global playing field, shouldn't the government not be using that money to offset consumer costs?
