Segregationist Democrats left the party again in large numbers during LBJ's administration, when the Civil Rights Act was passed. The GOP welcomed them with open arms. The primary reason they were Dems in the first place was because the Republican Party was the party of their enemy and nemesis, Lincoln.

By the 1960s, the Democratic Party had become very critical of prominent racists in their ranks, and that helped to push them out. My own father, raised in Texas, was one of those who switched to the GOP during that decade. (Yes, dear old dad was a racist for most of his life, until my brothers and I harranged him out of that nonsense and got him to see people individually. Those were the days!)

It had nothing to do with socialism or communism or any other ism. It was about fear-based hatred of others, period.

Don't remember any Democrats leaving the Democratic party and coming under the GOP tent and being welcomed with open arms except once, during the 1970's and early 80's when the patriotic liberals with in the Democratic party fled the Democratic party when the radical "New Left" hijacked the Democratic party. They were known as neoconservatives (NEOCONS)

Going back to the 1930's the Republican party was always the minority party. The only time a Republican found himself in the White House was when Democrats put him in the White House.
Things have changed over the past twenty years, today independents are making the decision who will be sitting in the Oval Office.

The South went with Nixon in 1968 but the voters in the South kept sending Democrats to Congress and to their state capitals and the Southern county Sheriffs always seemed to be Democrats.

Nixon's Southern Strategy had nothing to do with race but more to do with the Vietnam War that the Democrats got America into but had no will to win and bring to an end.
