The left wants to do away with Columbus day. They want to re-write history. But on the other hand they love the United Nations. But are they aware the UN says immigration is a human right. So------------in fact Columbus should be celebrated since he was the start of immigration to the new world.

    Can the left say hypocrisy?

While seeking 'get rich quick' scheme, man gets lost, finds primitive cultures and abuses them.

I tend to not find Columbus very celebratory either.

We should change it to America Day and just celebrate how awesome we became after Columbus.

Even if I don't like when the left try to pretend that Columbus travel weren't important, on that I understand. Columbus was a human trash, even for the standarts of his time.

    Already had the debate.
There were already native american ? Doesn't change that both the "old world" and "new world" ignored the existence of the other one.
Vikings, polynesian and maybe african and chinese already set the foot on that continent ? None of those expeditions ended to put the "new" continents to be put definitively on maps.
It's Amerigo Vespucci who understood it was a new whole continent ? Still Columbus that would do the travel that would lead Vespucci to understand that.
Columbus was a piece of trash ? Not the first piece of trash to discover/understand important things. We could speak of nazi scientists.

The travel of Columbus remain of crucial importance in history, even if he is an evil dude. Facts don't care of your feelings.

Columbus was in the employ of the King of Castile and Aragon he should get the holiday named after him.

Or you could name "discovery of America day". History was pretty brutal at that time and the kingdom of Castile and Aragon were quite brutal aswell.

Without Columbus, most of us living in the Americas today wouldn't be here, perhaps not even born. Sure, someone else would have discovered the Americas after Columbus, but history would have been completely different. Besides we know Columbus wasn't the first European to discover the Americas, the Vikings were here around 1100AD. Asians from Siberia and China were the first that we know of some 15,000 plus years ago. But not the first Europeans who were keeping written records.

Columbus Day was big when I grew up as a kid in the 1950's. Parades, the whole nine yards. It's basically just another normal day pretty much everywhere today. Outside of banks and post offices closed. I don't care if the federal holiday is kept or isn't. We've have enough holidays I don't think we need to replace it with another if we do away with it.

Now I do think all of us need to recognize we are who we are and we are here only because Columbus did set sail in 1492.

I totally agree on that. Columbus remain to had a very important role in history.
It have been shown however that Columbus had extremly violent behavour with the Arawaks, the native american of the island he discovered. When he brought many arawaks in slavery in Spain, the king and the queen would free them, shocked and angry by the behavour of Columbus to them. Apparently, it played a role in the fact that he was put in prison for 6 weeks.

I consider that we can regognize the important role of someone, and yet agree as well that from a morale point of view, he wasn't someone good.

Columbus never landed in North America, so what’s the big deal? He discovered the Caribbean islands.

But he proved there was a new world out there and effectively started diversity in the new world.

So does the left support diversity or not???

just because 'we' don't like our history, it's still our history, no need to disavow any of it... it won't change anything

The left wants to do away with history and the past so it can re-write it in the way they think will serve their purpose. Get those pesky facts out of the way.
That has happened before in many countries, including Stalin's Russia and Hitler's Germany.

Depends on your perspective - If you were an American Indian, the Columbus decreased their numbers dramatically. He brought new disease and war. If you were from a persecuted religious group from Europe, then Amerigo Vespucci discovery of the mainland was a way to open doors to freedom. Nothing is just black and white - there are always a thousand shades of grey.

Happened here in the US as well. Most American history courses in high school start with the European discovery of the US - but we know there were cultures here thousands of years prior. It was more expedient to pretend that non-white Christian history did not exist.

Have no idea why it's called Columbus Day, it was originally a day to celebrate Americans of Italian decent and celebrating the diversity of America when immigrants assimilated to America's established culture, customs, traditions and having one common language.

I suppose Columbus was the most known Italian back in the day.

Would the cultural-marxist leftist prefer Mussolini Day ?

Mussolini was a former communist, wasn't rich or a narcissist.

Donald Trump is filthy rich, so was Patton.

Donald Trump is a narcissist, so was Patton.

Donald Trump is politically incorrect, so was Patton.

Donald Trump will call a spade a spade when he sees one, so did Patton.

Donald Trump is an American nationalist, so was Patton.

Yup, everyone knows that Patton dodged military service by pretending to have bone spurs ... that's why he is called General Bone Spurs.
