There was s secular power in Assad who was brutal towards Al-quada and ISIS, now to my thinking the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
But Clinton/Obama were not happy enough that they turned Libya into a quagmire they decided they were on a roll and lets syria have a go too. We are now selling arms to SA and they are in turn giving them to Al-queda in Syria! WTF.

Putin dominates by aligning with the dictators. We did need to get involved to try to stop ethnic cleansing. But we went about it the wrong way. The stupid way. no, Assad as a secular dictator kept the various fractions under control. By brutal means, but he kept them weak. he gave the kurds somewhat limited autonomy to keep them in line. When civil war broke out we took advantage and used the kurds as mercenaries.
But Assad kept the Christians safe, something the kurds, alqueada or ISIS certainly would not.

 

I doubt either one would do it. But if they would I would salute them and wish them luck.

You're right about the troops. But you're forgetting the cost of the bases themselves. Maintenance, transportation of supplies, housing, etc etc aren't all that cheap.
