No, my question is why doesn’t each country pay for their own defense? That’s the logical approach. If Germany wants to play footsie with Putin under the table, why should we or anyone else protect them from the long term consequences? If France wants to end sanctions on Russia for their personal gain, why should the UK or the US be on the hook when it comes back to bite them?

You have a complete totalitarian state that is outcompeting the West at their own game, is taking over STEM, that is colonizing Africa, that is openly engaged in an ethnic genocide, that is buying up media outlets/creators in the West, and has literally forced American elites to openly take a knee favoring China over Hong Kong.

This is not a war that can be won with military power. Frankly it is not a war that can be won at all. I have looked at the size of the Chinese population and the average IQ of its citizens and frankly I think in a few decades the only country that could possibly get in their way is India.

Simple big reasons. The U.S. can't afford to lose major European powers as allies. This was a fundamental truth during the Cold War and it still is today.

 

I guess that's a matter that we could debate, but the President ultimately decides that, and I guess Trump doesn't agree with you.

You know what, allies that play both sides aren’t allies. They are liabilities. We were successful for a while at keeping peace in Europe. But we will never change their nature. Exploitation, intrigue, colonialism, broken treaties, and outright war are in their DNA. Seventy-five years of forced cessation of hostilities hasn’t changed that. Freedom isn’t even a concern of theirs on a macro level. It’s like the war on drugs here. A complete waste of our resources.

Don’t get me wrong. Europeans are family. I harbor no ill will for any individual. But on the political world stage, it’s time to let them police themselves and secure their own freedoms if they want them.

 

They aren't family. They can take care of themselves, or die. It matters not a whit to Americans.

In any future war NATO will be irrelevant, as will all nuclear deterrents. The main problem Europe has now is ongoing immigration into the EU member countries, and NATO can't sort that out; that's why the EU wants its own military - or maybe para-military would be a better word - because the police won't be able to cope with what will need to be done, such as enforced repatriations.

 

And not only for 'world peace', but to help us take on radical Islam when it gets its act together - which will be soon. I fear that the two incidents here in the UK outside of school gates could be the beginning of it, as are some of the street stabbings.

Nations (read "Russia") don't start wars they think they might lose...and with a strong NATO alliance and Article 5 that is the outcome that any nation would have to consider.

Split that alliance up and that calculation changes dramatically

That is not what I said. Since their commitment is not world wide they do not need to match our overall level of expenditure for military defense.
They should do more for European defense I am all with that. That is not what the Trump guy is saying.

 

There's no denying that since Trump took office, NATO has been significantly stronger. The president secured $130 BILLION in new NATO defense spending - the largest increase in NATO funding in a generation!
