Lots of Ramen. Dollar store eggs. Beans. Peanut butter. A local bakery would sell its day old bread for 50 cents per. Dollar store instant coffee was a luxury, but I could usually get coffee at school/work. My specialty was "Pasta a la poverty".

Most of the canned food charities here get food at a great discount or free from grocery stores-50 bucks a month goes a long way.

May I ask what you were doing during this time? Your work and/or school?

 

It was bearable for me because I was about to go from 15K a year while taking college courses 5 days a week and working all day saturday, to a 120K a year job starting wages.

2nd year was 80/hrs a week in clinic and I could only work on the few saturdays I had free.

I did have to live in a ghetto apartment, where 4 people tried a home invasion one day. My pistol convinced them to reconsider.

 

Narrative is more important than the truth to many.

For the same reasons "gun deaths" statistics include suicides.....cost of living poverty levels at the state level is also ignored for the same reasons.

You'll find that a lot of conservative people experienced poverty. That's how we know government handouts don't fix it.

 

And a lot of us have experienced poverty without taking government assistance, which is how we know it can be done.

I am a liberal that experienced poverty. My family(granted I did have both parents)
were helped with food stamps at one time. And thank God for my grandparents. That is what really got us through. Without that family structure it would have been much worse.

My point is that I grew up pretty damned poor and my family was very grateful for gov't assistance. You just have a different view.

The point is though, that government assistance should be designed to get you OFF government assistance, not to keep you on it.

 

I'm a subscriber! Some of that food is awful! He does show you how to make cheap meals for the family. Lots of beans and rice.
