I very much agree with this. It seems to me that the opinion coming out of the German media is that Germans are holding their noses, waiting for the nightmare of Trump to end. Except inside his bubble, most people do not like Trump. They can see how ignorant, deluded, and dishonest he is.

Repeatedly, when world leaders meet, Trump is the one out of touch. The one other leaders point at and laugh. It just baffles my mind, that around 40% of Americans have a positive opinion of Trump.

How soon before the alliance is officially broken? Is there talks in Germany of officially pulling out of NATO. Are there timelines on when American troops and equipment have to leave Germany? Who is spearheading these plans to break the alliance? Is Angela Merkel or will it be her successor?

I think Merkel started it 2017 when she said USA is not a trustworthy partner.

Meanwhile parallel structures are made for independend german defense in cooperation between us and France as well as other partners. The decission to block US defense companies from defense contracts ect has all to do with this.

I assume once the paralleel structures stand, there will be a formal note to USA to leave. Giving a 2 or 4 year time frame, where the details between both nations can be negotiated.

To be honest I see this as a good thing. I think it is time to re-evaluate alliances and the responsibilities associated with them. The world has changed a lot since the original formation of NATO so it is time for the alliance to change. The old school world views have to change. I would like to see the US bring more of its troops and equipment home. I hope your estimates are correct and Germany will leave in 2-4 years.

 

I can understand why, having been crushed twice in World Wars in which the US played a significant role, you people would have reason to be afraid of the current US leader.
