The prevailing ideas and attitudes about Iran in the US and western media more generally are simply ignorant and stupid, from A-Z. They represent a long standing propaganda effort. The propaganda had some elements of truth in the early years after the revolution, but as any truth in what was being said has largely given away to new realities, a lot more fiction and falsehoods has taken its place to fulfill the neocon/Israeli driven agendas against Iran. Westerners who visit Iran are often simply shocked by the disconnect between the reality they observe and what they have been told about the country.

I wonder if this has been a case of hunting fever by the US military. The guy was very hard to get a hold of outside of Iran.
