How much cost is life of a person worth?
Ultimately, this is the question which is in the room and needs to be answered ... individually, but also by society as a whole. Of course, the economic consequences are tough, no question, because if 33 million US citizens become unemployed like they are now, the US society will be hit hard. Only ... why is the US society hit so much harder than everyone else among the unemployed? Perhaps the US citizens should ask themselves the question and then look at the other countries that do it much better in their societies with no such hard cnsequences and much lesser unemloyment quote.

We in Germany are also a federal state like the USA ... albeit geographically smaller, only 16 federal states and only 83 million inhabitants in total. Here, too, the 16 federal states are governed differently, as in the United States, some by the same party as the federal government, others by the opposition. Our politicians and the federal as well as state governments and no matter which party managed to work together on the uniform shutdown and to make a joint decision to gradually loosen the shutdown. No matter which federal state, if a county's daily rate of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants is exceeded, the loosening will be reversed ... uniform across Germany! So far, this has only happened in 3 counties.

Question: Why aren't you capable of such sensible measures in the USA and prefer to tear yourself apart?

The civil rights of citizens are important, but there are always situations where they become and have to be secondary ... for the benefit of society as a whole!
It was always like that, is so in many things in life and always will be ... even without a pandemic.
The issue here is that the health care system in the United States (and in all other countries as well) is not overexerted and broken down by far too many infected citizens. For example, there are only a limited number of places / beds in intensive care units to treat sick citizens ... one country has more, the other less ... who have the right to treatment, right?
In such matters, civil rights are paramount for the benefit of society as a whole!

That was the last proof for everyone in the world that you have to think very carefully about getting involved with the United States as an ally ... and let it be better.
