“Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey made a surprise appearance on Fox News's Bret Baier's show Tuesday night to try and bring some common sense back to society. He regretted to see that we Americans started off on the same page, intent on defeating the coronavirus, but once again we let politics overwhelm us.

"About a month ago I could feel that this united purpose that we all have as Americans to beat this enemy and this virus, that purpose got hijacked a bit by partisan politics,"”

He is right. We need to stay united and beat the virus. It’s sad that certain governors got so power mad that people felt the need to rise up and protest in the 1st place. Each county in each state should be allowed to set its own pace for lock down to re opening and restarting the economy.

A very good interview and a very good cause. A positive story about the response to the pandemic

OP:"We need to stop being so partisan!"
OP: "I'm going to state my political opinion because it's the right one and if anyone disagrees with me they're "power mad"".

The fact is that certain governors have become control freaks with a god complex in wielding emergency powers to micromanage our lives. That had to be resisted.

The fact that's so partisan and yet you try to defend it as nonpartisan. Have you even tried to reasonably guess why the states are doing what they're doing, like act in good faith? No. You haven't.

    Good job failing the thread.

He also said this about wearing masks during a CNN interview which I think is something that more people, more pundits, more celebrities, more ahem White House officials need to be saying.

Good faith would have been allowing the citizens to have a say in the matter. And in a certain case that is and will be the example of the fall of grace of our country(Michigan), interfering in patient-doctor matters, and banning sun flower seeds! Because that's oh so democratic.

4 years later after 2016, the Democratic Party has shown me in fact that it still does not deserve my vote.

Good faith is explaining why the governors made the decisions they did, instead of attacking them.

They claim "for our safety" but they(nor anyone) has any proof of that. I'm saying that people don't like being ruled by edicts, they like being governed fairly and justly. We need a back and forth, even with the coronavirus.

Then why don't you find proof of their positions?

You want me to find proof of what they stand for and believe? We're both philosophers, that's THEIR JOB. It's up to Governor Wolf(PA) to convince his fellow citizens in the state of Pennsylvania. It's up to your governor in your state to actually represent you and not diktat to you.

This isn't just a failure at the governor mansions, this is an indictment to the Democratic Party. This is their "response to Trump", which is to be worse at government than he is. I know Democrats are confused about this, but to win in 2020, you've got to pluck off Trump support, and further antagonizing the people and shutting down their businesses is not a winning strategy.

Killing off several thousands of them might be even worse

Nope. It’s your job too. Philosophers invoke the principle of charity which means they must construct the strongest argument possible they will argue against. That means finding evidence for a position too. You have to do the same if you will argue against what the democrats are doing.

So much for the "let's put politics aside" sentiment huh?

I don’t care if those who feel the need for their city or county to stay at home under shutdown longer do so. That’s fine. What I seriously object to are governors like I describe who lock up their whole state based on the city county with the greatest needs and hold all the counties in their state hostage to the conditions of the hardest hit area in their state.

It's rather simple for me. We stood for the principle of 'life, freedom and the pursuit of happiness'. The governor diktats stand against that. Furthermore, the diktats didn't work nearly as well, even with 52% of Americans complying. Some of this by necessity as we were deemed 'essential' and 'non-essential' workers and businesses.

Not only did it fail the public health, but far graver, it failed the moral body of the Republic. Moral wrongs are absolute(whereas moral rights are subjective.. If I were governor, I would take the approach of isolating the hotspot areas, while monitoring the situation across the State.

And at minimum, I certainly wouldn't close down parks and arrest parents for taking their kids out. We can preserve the public health without denigrating the country or its principles.

Or like the LE who enforced some ridiculous order by harassing a mom for letting her child play with a child neighbor...

I agree. Most people feel that way. It's only partisans on both sides who are a shrill minority that are exploiting the pandemic.
