So a non answer then cleverly disguised as stating your original point as if it's common ground?

Well yes it is. That's why we have farming subsidies. But even then, why do we have an economy in the first place and why do we promote the economy?

Because people have to eat and have shelter...that’s why they work and we have an economy.

no the govt doesn’t force people to work...at least in a free society...in socialist countries they do

The government doesn’t force you to work, it just puts policies in place that denies you agency to do anything but work. Now why do we have an economy? Why does it matter if people have shelter and food?

No it doesn’t...the govt didn’t create the need for humans to eat. Did you really ask why people need food?

we have an economy because people have a desire not to die...they must trade, to earn food...shelter...Etc.

Govt simply organizes society...it didn’t create society or the desire to live. We have an economy because we have a desire to live

Now ask yourself the key question-why do people need to eat?

Yes it does by taking away agency. Agency isn’t the same as free will.

is assume the controversy boils down to:
    1) I can't keep getting paid to stay home even if my workplace is open? WTF?
    2) Orange Man Bad

Does that sum it up or did I miss something

Because they die if they don't eat.....the Govt didn't create that.

The Govt didn't take away agency. Not sure what agency has to do with anything we are discussing.

The Govt doesn't force you to work....you are free to go die in the street if you want.

Think before they die. What do you think they’re going to do to the government? Especially if they have long standing grievances?

And yeah that’s my point exactly. That’s agency. The government took agency away to make people work.

FWIW, I wasn't that thrilled to go back to my office, however the one reassurance I had was that I knew it was far safer there than I am when I visit the grocery or big box store, small staff, split shifts, we traded work days for a bit then just started showing up because these godforsaken customers just won't leave us alone :)

After the initial apprehension and some slight modifications to allow for spacing it worked out just fine.

My advice is simple, unless your job is the company doorknob licker, its probably not as bad as you think back at work, go for it!

I haven't stopped going to the office, and we haven't changed anything other than buying extra hand soap.
If anything, my commute is faster, and my cost is less.

When did the Govt take agency away?

I hope people think before they die and partake in the economy so they can buy necessities.

the biggest change we made for April was a sign on the (locked) door that said appointment only but a knock was good enough for an appt, not that we had many walk ins, everyone was paranoid so nobody was dropping in to say hello anyway.
now the sign says be mindful of others, good enough for us, foot traffic is down but we've compensated by stepping up the docusign sends big time to help everyone out, which has proven to be a real time saver, less house calls, less drop ins.

I do have a nice new scanner/high speed printer at home, which is pretty sweet, I had a $59 crap scanner before because it didn't get used much except in the evenings, now It gets used much more, otherwise, business as usual.

We don't even have that. Everyone works more than 6 ft apart, and there's only a handful of us.

If you have a limited amount of places to go you have a limited amount of places to spread infection. Of course shutting things down wasn't the end of the strategy. Social distancing was just as critical but, sadly, less enforceable. Come winter we'll have to address that because yes those essential mega stores are a problem. We'll need occupancy limits to be a nation wide thing and we've got to kill this stubborn selfish aversion to wearing masks and staying way from people. Winter will be worse if we don't.

I still can't do anything but roll my eyes at the absurdity of what is "essential", or the idea that somehow Walmart and Dollar Stores are ok (two places I avoided at all costs even before COVID), but a whole bunch of smaller cleaner places are baaaad because the fearmongering media said so

Then there's "you're okay sitting on the patio drinking a beer while you wait for your take-out food, but you're going to diiiieeee if you eat on the patio......!!!!"

Folks need to turn off the tv and use common sense. (The first person to complain common sense is only a conservative trait, I'm putting them immediately on ignore. I'm tired of the partisan insanity.)

Amen. I couldnt buy shoes but I could buy shoes at Walmart, the biggest doorknob lickfest in town. I mean seriously the only thing more dangerous than walmart is patty the daytime hooker.

Republicans know it's not safe, or they would not be trying to pass laws to protect employers from employees that are harmed or killed by the employer's failure to keep a safe working environment for their employees

employees should have been getting hazard pay for working through this pandemic

Trump shut down the economy for everyone but essential workers... these were the only ones considered essential to our survival during a pandemic
