I can learn everything a homeschooled person can learn on a computer...There is no lack of educational material available. The only thing lacking is motivation to learn if you be stupid.

We can do a whole lot better for a whole lot less.

Since most classroom time is listening to instruction, 80% of paid hours can be eliminated.
Video lectures of the best teachers would give all students access to the same experience regardless on income. Slower students can repeat the lesson without slowing down the quick learners.
The time they would normally spend repeating themselves can be spent with those who need one on one help.

Text should never be expensive. Authors don't own the information, they are overpaid for their own version of text. Huge waste.

While this is great for students, it is strongly opposed by the teachers union that would lose their monopoly.

As long as one has access to a computer with internet access. How many disadvantaged inter city stuck in government school kids have this?

in the 70's and 80's for me school choice was my parents choosing move me to a better neighborhood, which in a couple examples meant there was only one school, but it was our choice.

In the 00's and 10's for my kid we had school choice in my city and I can't imagine why every municipality isn't doing this, its an absolute flat out no brainer. The city had grown so there were several options, we visited each one during open house, talked to neighbors about their opinions and made the right decision for Elem,Middle,HS, and then college. I strongly felt that it was my responsibility as a parent to put them in the right school, admittedly I wasn't that involved in the education part after that but the kid pulled straight A's so it wasn't necessary, if needed I would have stepped up there as well. Actually one of the better schools in the area now is a charter school, their reputation is so strong that they are always at capacity with a waiting list of transfers.

Why are federal taxes being funneled to private schools? As this thread has shown, private school attendees - generally - have students from higher income families. And the schools benefit from tuitions. Yet, de Vos is sending large amounts of the virus aid to private schools. She is ignoring the stipulations put into the distribution of aid.

I wonder if its racial inequality when wealthy black people hire tutors?

yes. I assume we agree, it won't work for everyone, but the ones it WILL work for should have equal access. There will always be a segment that can't or won't learn that way for a multitude of reasons, so there will always be a market for full time brick & mortar students, and thee will always be a need for some hands on experience, I also believe that it helps with social development. I'm certainly not advocating 100% online learning by any stretch, but even a healthy % who are well suited to that style would benefit greatly and overall it would make a huge difference.

And a big yes to the teachers union

Whole bunch of them aren't there? But this isn't just a black thing as there are tons of poor white children facing the same poor education system issue.

I am not sure. Bill Gates did donate large amounts but I am sure some still go without or do not have access to internet service because of location or income. Congress did pass monies to help those at home during the pandemic with internet access yet I am sure some did without.

Since when does anyone care about poor white people? They're privileged in their trailer parks, didn't you know? They can go get scholarships and attend MIT if they want. Nothing stopping them. It's good livin compared to those folks in the inner cities with no opportunities=)

What a steaming load of crap.

After the "left to effective control over the system:"

    We have:
    Electronic ignition
    MRI
    Barcode
    Super computer
    Personal Computer
    GPS
    LI Batteries
    the scanning tunneling microscope
    DNA foresnsics
    Email
    WWW
    Smartphone
    Fuel Cell vehicles
    Drones
    CDs
    DVDs
    ...

Your problem is that they decided to stop teaching your particular religious view in the public schools.

Sorry, a 2000 year old myth about some guy who claims to be some kind of god is maybe something fo a world cultures class or world literatures but not for the rest of school.

These people weren't educating their kids in the public schools before and certainly aren't going to take the time to teach them personally now.

    It it what it is.

not going to argue, its a simple fact of life.
Even the best schools have worthless students, and the worst schools still have a valedictorian, they can't do the learning for you, but being in a good school with good peers can be a critical step in the right direction.

The good news is that it is being done. 2 of my kids struggled in school. Their high school principal told me they had severe ADHD, that I should put them on meds immediately, and was going to hold them back a year.

I put them in a charter school that operated like I described, they only went to school once a week and worked at their own pace.

Both graduated early. At their graduation, I saw students walk across the stage that would have never graduated under the old system. A pregnant teen, one in recovery, and a kid whos family was homeless. Teachers union wants them shut down!

~ One of the best examples of getting rid of public school "institutions" in this post. Kids with emotional problems, nervous disorders, broken home environment , learning disabilities do so much better in small school settings. Often they excel ! Many times their thinking is actually above average.
Hard to believe when you listen to politically motivated "experts" receiving donations and pay-offs from those not concerned with quality of life. Society in general would improve if the U.S. dumped the current public school system.

Its all about money. Allowing competition from non-union schools will eventually put them out of business or worse, make them work!

During the last teachers strike, my sons charter school was open for business. Their valedictorian list was bigger than most school's graduation list!

Keeping in mind that these are government school 'educated' students, I'd be more concerned if they could SPELL before I'd worry about can they type.
