All the guys I know are really advanced, professionals in their own right & perhaps not the best "teachers" for a novice who doesn't have aspirations of winning anything at a rodeo...

Any of you try picking up this rather specific skill set in your adulthood? I do have these pesky yearlings that keep getting under the fence in spots (cus they are so small) it would be really impressive if I were to be able to rope one w/o all the fuss that goes into calling in for 'backup', lol...

Yehh, I won't be trying to this on a horse initially, just throwing from my own x 2 feet...

I have picked up a few pointers / tricks, lol... A "softer lay" (rope) is better to learn with (I know the eye rolls ~ but some truisms are universal)... Folding the top rope over the other in grasp is key to getting the loop to swing flat... The handle or spur, something like that (the distance between the 'honda' & grasp) should be about 1/4 the size of the loop. Wrist action, folding the wrist down & over into the swing ~ also very impt.

I'm slowly learning, lol... (my yearling calves don't stand a chance - should they get out of the fence) :)

Might your water hose 'wrangling' techniques coax 4 legged critters back behind stranded fencing?

Only if I can spray them... better than lassoing one of the critters, try lure them in the fence with tasty feed.

My 3rd rope (3 strand poly, (5/16") w/ lead in each strand) is my favorite so far ~ wish some legit cowboys would weigh in here, cus it's a lot of trial by error in rope selection thus far... If any of y'all would volunteer to come over & mill around an 'open tap', kegerator ~ I might really get some quality rope time in on live 'critters'... :)

I do know a quality lariat is not cheap. If you lived here you could find real cowboys. You can tell by the diesel flatbed truck with the yeti cooler towing a horse trailer with a saddled horse with a yellow rain slicker, a lariat and a dog or two. Black mouth curs or aussie cattle dogs.

For all of my time living in the South West (SoCal) 'not sure that really counts as Western' (just like FL doesn't really count as Southern); I never picked up a rope or had an inclination to do the rodeo thing. Sadly, it was all about the academics, clubs, Venice --> Malibu beach life scene etc. I really regret that!!!

(I am glad that I'm not back in SoCal, at the moment, though...)

Of course Florida is Southern, we have the Southern most point in the continental US. :) Typical south Fl ranch land. [IMG][IMG] You can buy this 100 acre ranch for 690K [IMG]

[IMG] This is what a lasso looks like, notice the bit of leather there at the noose.. they aren't very long.. 10 to 12 ft. and the rope is a little stiff.. a new one has to be loosened up, usually by throwing the end over a stationary object (fence post) and trying to stretch it.. i.e. you have to break in a good lasso.

@FatBack... Beautiful ranch, I'm really happy for you in your 'diggs'...

But that might not mean that you are "SOUTHERN"...

I wish I owned that ranch, I live in the city about 8 miles south of it. Pentacost Ranch is another beautiful one. Sadly, Mosaic wants to strip mine phosphate on 19K acres in Desoto county. Here is the Peace river they will destroy for ages to come. I have often swam and camped and hunted fossils and even took a wild sow hog with a pistol, years ago. Ranchers run cattle to the waters edge, in many places. I have jumped off this bridge about ten times but I wont anymore :) Caretaker at the park will call the Po Po on you, plus it's blackwater, even though I know where the hole is, you never know whats down there.

What I did post & thought 2nd about was about the humidity & lack of topography... (Family had a condo & then built a house in Vero Beach) - just couldn't stand it but then again ( I have only experience Orlando, FL airport --> to the East coast of FL...

I couldn't stand the lack of topography & the oppressive air...

Give me x 36" of snow & I'll be happy, lol... (antithetical Persian Iranian)

It's all i know, born and raised here. Last time I even left the state I was 8 yo. Now pushing 40, I cant exert myself in the heat like I used to and Hurricanes are no fun. Here is my city after Hurricane Charley rippe thru here in 2004. Hurricane Irma did a number on us in 2017. NOT looking forward to an active storm season

For me, whips, chains, ropes, hell, I'll use velcro straps in a pinch.
