I would suggest everyone left or right read today's Bloomberg article titled "Coronavirus brings American decline out in the open." It points out many of the things that have declined in America over the past 60-70 years, from the 60's when we were able to build one mile of interstate in one week, today it takes us one year to build 100 yards if we are lucky.

What is there to even comment on? The statement for one is completely stupid. 1 year to build 100 yards. How does one comment on something so idiot that anyone with any common sense knows it is complete hyperbole. After the flood on the Missouri by Council Bluffs they did a complete rebuild on 2 miles in 1 month. And try putting a link on you post it helps to get people interested.

part of the reason why it take so long to build interstate is because the companies that build them purposely extend the jobs in order to make more money. They will slow down the work because they get paid more money for longer jobs.

Don't you think that then need to keep high car count roads passable while upgrading the road to more lanes in a confined area would make it difficult to get stuff done quickly. Granted I do feel that the construction company's are most definitely screwing over the American tax payer.

Right is the way. Here in Pa. we had an intersection which they added 2 lanes to, they worked on it for over 2 years and it's worse now than before they started. We have also had 2 different two lane roadway small bridges replaced in the past 5 years each one took over 2 years to finish. Workers today have two speeds DEAD SLOW and STOP.

I want to move there. I live in a small town (~9K) and our main highway is under construction. It took an 1.25 hours to get through about 1/4 mile just last week. I don't understand why they do it in the summertime (when kids are out of school and more back and forth traffic). I know winters are tough here in the Midwest but there has to be a happy medium (no pun intended) somewhere.

May e you have crappy workers. Does not take that long here. 20 to 30 miles of nehighway rebuild a year on the highway 20 project. And that is a 2 lane to 4 lane complete rebuild.

All construction contracts should have time constraints with penalties for failure to meet timelines. Obviously extreme weather would also be added in to the equation.

Our public transportation is old and antiquated and has never been kept up to date with the modern world, which is also true of 99% of our infrastructure.

However, the quality of life and ease of making a living have increased substantially in that same time. The things you are calling decline (things we can't do now) are things that the liberals, the environmentalists and democrats have made far more difficult or impossible by their lack of foresight and comprehension of the overall challenge of maintaining a society and economy. They focus in on one problem- or what they perceive as a problem and "Fix" what usually wasn't broken without any consideration for the peripheral impacts of what they are doing. The pile of rules and regulations build, and eventually everything, anything, is impossible to do; too complex to wrap your head around. The level of arrogant incompetence is astounding, and the people spoon-fed on the idealism of it have no idea why it's not working, other than assuming they didn't go far enough and if they just add more rules, they will be able to force somebody (besides them) to make it work. Corona virus didn't do that- the leftist movement has. What kind of an idiot would create a social uproar in the middle of an epidemic? That kind. No awareness of the crisis already around us, have a hemorrhage over the excuse of the unjust death of a criminal which had already been promptly address by authority. "Arrogant Incompetence" is a kind and respectful term for such gross stupidity.

Any skilled leader or manager knows that if you make too many rules, you create a paralysis where nothing can be accomplished. When you do that in a city or a nation- eventually, things stop happening, and every fool is an expert that will fight to keep his favorite collection of rules- while continuing to ignore the cumulative effect.

The least perfect of us are those who demand perfection while not having the ability to survive without their cell phone and a nanny. left-thinkers.

How so ? - in the 50's/60's a fellow working at Sears could afford a car - a house - and wife did not have to work.

Now - even with both working at Sears - one can not afford such luxury.

A very simplistic perspective to think that Liberals are the only one's that see the obvious decline.

I do agree that the regulatory nightmare is an issue. Red outsourcing our manufacturing base would be another.

That crap about rules and regulations is the standard right wing fall back on excuse. We have regressed as a society Period. Post WW2 we led the world in just about everything, most importantly welcoming immigrants who drove our economy and innovation. Pulling in the welcome mat is helping cripple us today. Especially since 1980 we have been on a continuous downward spiral.

About the time that the first generation of children raised without discipline and given Ritalin instead of discipline for misbehavior became of age to hold jobs and vote.
Your timing is right, but that's all.

People who can't cut it always think the answer comes from the outside instead of finding some backbone.

Since the Nixon era when we began putting high fructose corn syrup into virtually everything in the inner aisles of our super market, Americans have gotten fatter and less healthy with each succeeding generation. We have become a nation of lazy fat asses. Our nations hard physical work down, out in the elements, is done by immigrants from South of our border and has been for the past twenty plus years, as our citizens get fatter and less healthy.

American males need to begin to reposition themselves in our societal infrastructure, they are allowing females to surpass them in all academic endeavors.

Careful now, that sounds like something one of those "evil capitalist exploiters of workers" would say. Are you suggesting that people should actually have to be productive and work hard for food, housing, clothing, and medical care?

Look at our working population and compare them to Americans of fifty and more years ago. Back then fat people stood out like a sore thumb because they were few and far between, now fat asses are a dime a dozen.

We patch and do repairs we do not do complete replacement as we should when major water pipes break in our cities, we put in a patched in replacement, while most of the piping dates back to 1900 and earlier. Same thing with our major cities sewerage systems it's patch nd repair never replace as is really necessary.

Another glaring example of our decline is the present ongoing debate as to whether Dirty Donald was or was not aware of the intelligence briefing informing him that Russia was offering Afghani Taliban a bounty for killing American and our allies military. Another Banana Republic signal.

This is the issue with having prevailing wage as a universal law. the workers have no incentive to get the work done on time because they're getting paid a lot more than they would have other jobs. there needs to be a limit on prevailing wage where it ends after a certain. Of time and they are paid normal wages after that. this would take away the incentive for them to be slower because they are no longer going to be allowed to get paid big money for the job after a certain. Of time.
