Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Protestors are taking down statues of generals and Presidents just because they owned slaves. They are erasing history completely thereby dooming the next generation to repeat it. I walked by a statue of Robert E. Lee a few years ago and thought "Look at that guy, so majestic on a horse. I should never own slaves." Future generations will never get that experience and they'd own slaves again.

All it takes is for someone to get the idea that they might want to be one. Is it really so hard to sell the virtues of indentured servitude to people who subscribe to the idea that the good of the collective supersedes the good of the individual?

Wow! Who would have ever made the connection between Robert E. Lee and slavery. You are a genius.

Folks genuinely concerned about the good of the collective focus their energy on charity and community outreach. They help people.

Folks that want an authority to guide their life choices for them just prefer being able to blame someone else for their failure to having any chance of success. And of course dragging everyone else down with them so they can percieve failure as success

I am NOT, let me repeat that, I am NOT an advocate or in favor of taking down statues. However, taking down a statue does not magically erase history books. In fact, I would venture to guess very few people have learned history from seeing a statue. I'm willing to bet the overwhelming majority of people talking down the statues had no idea who the statues were of or the persons history. Most of these people are sheep who don't have a clue about much.

those who praise the Confederate statues, call them beautiful and put them on pedestals on state house lawns are the ones that have forgotten

put them in museums dedicated to our racist past and then maybe they will remember

As the lefties desperately re-write history, somewhere down the line and not that far off, there will be a whole generation of kids believing slavery never existed. Tear up those books and topple the statures. They are only hurting themselves.

The slavery narrative is just as much a tool of oppression as slavery itself. When you tell a generation that they are unable to succeed because of artifact of their distant past that they have no control of they will be less successful.

When you tell them they can be successful despite that past, those odds of success greatly increase.

The left is bitterly clinging to the past, not the right.

In a way the democrats do. They keep blacks on the democrat plantation with welfare, and harvest votes for democrats with taxpayer money.

    Exactly...

The Black population needs a second emancipation from the Democrat slave owners.

Never mind that over the long haul it serves neither the individual nor the collective.

We already have slaves. It’s called the caracel system.

Too late. We have slaves. They are called illegal immigrants.

The real lesson of history is that things are never really that simple.
The man who penned the words, "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights..." owned slaves. Even the best of men are complex mixes contradictory and not infrequently mutually exclusive ideas. That, in most regards, is what all those statues should be about, an ever lasting reminder that human beings good and bad all have feet of clay, and that all of us great and small could do with far more frequent self examination than we are inclined to do.

Oh and one last thing, since Tom Jefferson penned those immortal words the first thing every would be world beater seems to do is try to convince his followers that some other group of people is some how less than human.

Slaves were seen as less than human. This was the thinking for centuries before Thomas Jefferson was born. Illegal immigrants are considered an under class by some. People who say illegals do jobs Americans won't do see them as less than human. Why aren't you bellyaching about that?

I'm not belly aching about anything. I'm just stating facts. Facts are neither red nor blue they are just facts. Human beings aren't perfect, they've never been perfect and they are never going to, this side of heaven, become perfect. We lack the necessary prerequisites.

Ole Tom was, as are most men today, a walking pile of contradictory beliefs. The lesson of ole Tom and a great many other famous historical figures is that until one truly knows one's self, a major accomplishment in its own right, one cannot truly understand anything else.

My major problem with the left is that most of them haven't yet begun to take the first baby steps on that first journey and therefore are wholly unqualified to direct the rest of us in any direction at all.

Slavery has been commonplace in the USA for decades: it's just penal slavery rather than chattel slavery. American police forces have been helping the privately owned prison system supply (mostly black) slave labor to private corporations for over 30 years.

Any time I've suggested that illegals do jobs that Americans won't do, it was really a commentary on Americans, not the illegals. And the people who are doing the hiring.

They condense, then oversimplify, then relegate to a 6-pt.-Agate-type footnote on Page 492...and finally dismissed and forgotten. Just like their morals.

Two of my kids have the middle name Lee from the General. I’m as proud of that today as I was when I gave them the names. He was a hell of a general, and a man who left his country (he could have lead the Union army if he wanted) And his life is army service to defend his state. That kinda of conviction is something to admire.

Stop being so simplistic as to think the Civil War was fought by the soldiers involved over slavery, it was not.

Start with what percentage of the South owned slaves. Well under 10% by anyone’s estimate. Most as low as 3-5%. So do you really believe the 90-95% of the south who had no vested interest in slavery went to war over it?

Then stop and think who fought the War Of Independence that ripped this country out of tyranny into liberty. Their grandfathers...men they personally knew. It is a shock that when their states opted out of the Union they voluntarily joined and were responded too with armed response that they took up arms in defense of the rights their grandfathers fought for?

Then for more insights research the draft riots in NYC during the war. Sound like people wanting to do whatever they had to defeat slavery?

Slavery was and is a crime against humanity without any disclaimers. But it is not why the vast majority soldiers on either side fought the war. And those soldiers are the subject of the monuments you want removed.

Educate yourself beyond your 6th grade history class on the subject.

so what, your kids names do not represent anything to do with this, are all the kids named Jesus... Messiahs....

many on the right have forgotten what these statues stand for, when they were erected and why... they are trying to re-write history
