A lot of government land is in the desert out west. Not good for farming. Maybe herding cows.

As for myself, I'm too lazy to do sun-up to sun-down farming all day long.

I don't know, maybe my 2 acres could be used to run a business off of that property. But then I would need help to run that business.

It would have to be - one shot & that's it a pre-condition. (This is just one reason conservatives should support it; it ends the whole issue forever.) Lawyers - whatcha gonna do? Have to be - pre-condition. Possibly, but irrelevant: one & done a pre-condition.

Democrats would support that like they would support banning abortion after the age of five.

    You didn't answer my question:

why was the richest part of the town the most likely to be "nuked"?

Five is too young; they can still be pretty annoying at that point...

But one & done MUST be a pre-condition.

Conservatives should be lining up to support it!

Closest to the military base. It was (is?) home to the US air force command or something like that.

the richest part of town was closest to the base?

And part of the base was home to one of the Air Force Commands on the East Coast, but I doubt that was enough to make it a certain nuclear weapons target.

Well property values were highest there. I'm taking that to mean it was one of the richest places in town. And yeah, Rome NY. It's home to an important military base.

Only if we refuse to find a better way. Only if we sit on our hands and wait for someone to save us.

What do you think? Lots of limits - Obama (for instance) wouldn't be eligible for all sorts of reasons.

Hard to figure. Depends if you base it on lost opportunity or “pain and suffering “.
Of course. Obama wouldn’t qualify any more than I would. Both our ancestors come here quite willingly.

As a general rule as you approach the continental divided from the east the land becomes more and more difficult to subsist on. And that's where most open, federal land is found. As a general rule people who long term camp on BLM land in the West do not take showers, simply because water is so scarce, and expensive -- even drinking water is a considerable expense. Many of the National Parks have to contract truck the water and the fuel in for their facilities -- very expensive.

The Lewis and Clark expedition's hunting party found it easy to provide 9 pounds of meat per person per day for 45 explorers fighting the current up the Missouri, that is, until they crossed the continental divide and saw the Bitterroots ahead of them. Then came near starving times for them. In general, only a very few weather hardened souls would even want to attempt homesteading a mere two acres on that kind of land. There's not much protein to kill and eat, water is very difficult to obtain, not much grows, materials to build shelter are scarce, there's almost no chance of becoming employed, and there are few paved roads or even trails. But it is land that two stout and calloused feet can stand on. You can't stand on the sky.

The simple, and FAIR way to levy taxes for public schools is for those who have children in them (or who have ever had offspring in them) to pay those taxes, and to leave the rest of us ALONE! All this socialistic nonsense about how "we all benefit" is just a lot of conveniently thrown-together crap used to extort money from everybody to pay for the wants of one segment of society -- parents.

We are now a country with 330 million, in a world with 7.7 billion humans. Why should we spending the lion's share of all our property tax money on something that benefits only ONE segment of our society...? Do we have a shortage of humans?

The last thing I want is to take care of 2 acres of land. I am very happy in a town house with minimal responsibility :)

I sympathize. I would prefer to rely on myself for my own fire and police protection as well instead of being taxed for it. But I'm also a 'one step at a time' kindof person. I think reducing the cost of housing should be nearer the top of the list of national priorities right now.

Well, I'm happy to pay for professional firefighters and professional law enforcement officers -- along with professional departments that maintain streets, roads, bridges, and all the other infrastructure necessary for civilization. But, considering what kind of crap 'graduates' from American public school systems for the past forty years -- ANY other use of those many billions of dollars would be a better one....

When I start on one of these tantrums, the teachers' union supporters ask me what systems I like better -- and I immediately respond -- "The GERMAN system!" The German educational system is focused on the individual student, and that student's intelligence, abilities, proclivities, and interests.

Over here? The teachers just run one herd through after another, lowering everything down to the 'lowest common denominator', as fast as they can... and count the days until retirement! AND, band together in unions that force every suffering bastard who dares to own a home or a piece of ground to pay for it all, whether he has any children or not! :hippie:

Not going to happen. Prices might not increase (due to COVID), but fewer and fewer people will own their own homes.

As the pundits have predicted for years .... tomorrow's haves and have-nots will be determined by land, not money. Land is the only universal and eternally important asset. It's the one thing we can't create, and the one thing everyone needs. It's like mega-money.

I hate to demonize teachers. I'm certain they go in with enthusiasm and open minds and a plan to change things.

The system beats them down, and, at some point, they have to start thinking about themselves.

Nobody agrees more than me that the kids these days are getting a mostly terrible education. I blame administrators more than teachers, as a general rule. Teachers don't make rules.

Example: Our son has Asperberg's. His ability to learn is off the charts in some areas and severely stunted in others. He was reading at a college level before he got to Jr. High, but is now in his second senior year, and still doesn't really understand the "why" of math, let alone understanding how to do algebra.

We met at the school, quarter after quarter, semester after semester, pleading for help. They kept putting him in the next math class, even though he hadn't mastered the class before. Imagine a kid who doesn't completely understand addition and subtraction, and they are giving him geometry homework because that's the grade he's in. That is not a teacher policy; that administration/school board/state level stuff.

We tried private school for a bit. Not much better, really. He was treated like a second class citizen, and we paid almost 4K/month for the privilege. I think it's just FloriDUH.

Well, this semester is his last chance for a degree. We changed schools awhile back, and he's about to enter his 3rd year of HS. He's been doing better, there, but it took them YEARS to tell us about this place. Apparently it's a secret and only available to the worst case scenarios. (He was there in the sixth grade.)

*fingers crossed* He has been doing better at math.

Or at the very least let us hunt a few with dogs. Give them an idea how they made us feel.

None and done. My ancestors came here after slavery ended. I am not responsible in any way.
