The general march of science over the past few centuries has seen us derive more and more from less and less. The only time that has ever gone backwards has been since WWII when the business plan of the oil companies came to dominate even the reality that we would eventually run out of this finite resource. They were helped in this quixotic pursuit of the Old Ways by the fact that the planned substitute, nuclear energy, which would be practically infinite, hit a small snag on the double horns of massive safety problems and waste that stayed toxic forever. No biggie, fusion power is both safe and clean and will give us the fabled energy source unlimited to all intents and purposes, but how many trillions is Exxon worth now?

If present-day conservatives had been in charge of the energy industry back in 1850 we would now have both the Atlantic and Pacific as giant fish farms for whales and be wondering about how soon we could begin launching cetacean embryos to the watery worlds of Jupiter's moons since only that would provide enough whale oil to maybe see us through to 2050.

PS: You've chosen to earn $15 an hour - as you say, for political reasons. If you can afford to take that kind of risk over something as trivial as your political sentiments, then clearly you're nowhere near being genuinely poor. That would exclude you from qualification for affordable housing, if I had my way. A genuinely poor person would never be so careless with those much needed extra hourly dollars.

Science needs minds and education, of course. But the arts in the sense you mean, have brought us very little beyond immediate pleasures. Arguably, the fetishising of those kinds of arts has brought considerable social decay and damage to the small man - given they have historically come with artistocratic (ie, ultra safe and therefore dismissive of survival instincts) sentiment. Sold a lie, as it were.

Extrapolation: the small man's rabid pursuit of ever greater, more resource hungry, and more expensive (in every earthly and psychic sense) 'pleasures' is directly responsible for the poor health of the planet, and the current pandemic ... quite apart from its dire impact on survival instincts - rendering people unable to care for themselves at even the most basic level.
