A group in Georgia created what must be the best test case to date concerning what would happen if schools open under current conditions.

A camp required all those attending to pass COVID-19 testing. That included all kids, councilors and other adults.

After some number of days, one of the teens had to leave camp due to being sick.

Now, 344 kids and adults have been tested. 260 of those have COVID19. There are still over 200 who have not been tested.

So, this came after about a week of camp.

What's it going to look like after months of being in a classroom? How many family memebers are going to catch the disease from their school agee kids? How many teachers will die or have some form of permanent damage - or bring it home to THEIR familes?

Of course this is just one of the reasons why Republicans are pressing for liability protections in the second stimulus bill. They want schools to re-open so parents can go back to work (sick or not) and start churning the economy up so their donors can make money. And since parents cant go to work with kids at home that means the day-care system we refer to as public school needs to re-open. Of course the virus will spread and people will die and that means eventually the law suits will be filed and THAT'S when the liability protections can kick in.

I think that maybe we are too concerned with having the anti-bodies. You failed to mention how many of the "260 of those have COVID19" have been hospitalized and/or have died. Don't you think we ought to be more concerned with that? What's the figure of American Indians who died from diseases that Europeans were already immuned to? I'm 73 with a pace-maker and as such I am considered in the "high risk" zone so I am not advocating a free for all. I'm just saying .....

My country is on the bad boy list because we are not taking the virus as seriously as everyone else. In fact, very few countries allow us admittance because of it. Well, I spent last week in one of the newly opened countries and they are pretty tight about masks and what-have-you. So why did they let me in? Travelling by train everyone put on a mask as we neared the German border but everyone took it off when leaving.

It seems like a whole lot of grey area to me.

So my question has been, do all parents take the summers off when their kids aren't in school? New to me. Why would they have to stay home in this situation? Is it because of the online schooling? Sincere question - might be a dumb one, but I just don't understand...

Death is not the only permanent damage done by COVID19. Permanent damage gets done to organs including hearts, lungs, liver, etc. Plus, neruological damage has been found. People recovering from COVID have been found to have various mental deficits. Beyond that, there is the fact that this is a new virus type and viruses are known to be capable of going silent for long periods of time and then returning in some new way. For example, chicken pox viruses can lay dormant in nerve tissue for decades and then come back as shingles. We won't really know the damage done by COVID on the human body for a long time.

Plus, with far to little testing, wait times that reduce the value of testingg and almost no contact tracing, how could anyone know the full extent of the deaths that will come from this one stupidity?

On top of that, by keeping COVID19 active in America we continue to suppress our economy.

So, NO. I absolutely do NOT believe the number of deaths from those who actually attended the camp is of particular interest.

All you can say about what Europe is that what they are doing and who they admit is not fully known by you.

That's not "gray area" - thats just not knowing

My understanding is that the crackdown on entries from the US has been fairly recent, so it may have to do with your trip date.

Anyway, the main point I want to make is that this camp experience is a SHORT test of what in-person education faces. The camp TRIED to do it right. And, it can not be considered anything but a disaster.

I don't see this as being a year that could be considered usual.

With our economy taking a 30% hit, the jobless rate soaring, the expense and various dangers of daycare, etc., my bet is there are a lot more parents at home.

Outside of that, I'm not sure where you are going with this.

Trump's move to exempt meat packers and others from all possible job injury suits related to COVID is one of the nastiest assaults on working America that he could have POSSIBLY devised.

It frees these companies from having to care AT ALL. It allowed meat packers to totally ignore the direction of OSHA and CDC on cheap and reasonable measures for protection of workers.

Now he wants to do the same to teachers and children!!

He wants to DEMAND that they be exposed while there is no budget or methodology known for protection.

And, then he wants to ensure that when they get sick, teachers and stuudents are on their own - at a time when kids and their families are less and less covered due to the damage Trump has done to our system of health care coverage.

We've never had a president make such vile assaults on working Americans as what we've seen with Trump.

There has been the argument that one of the reasons kids need to go back to school is so that parents can go back to work. Hence my question...

How does that "argument" square with the OP example?

All I see is the "it will magically go away if we just ignore it" silliness.

We all know that MOST kids who get this virus, survive...the issue is that many of the people THEY infect will not

"Many" is a suggestable word. Show me the reputable statistic, please and then we'll decide if we think it is "many" or not.

"Magic" has yet to be claimed a part of the theory .... but there is a theory. Do you understand what it is?

    Can't hide from it.

Millions of years of evolution mean that the VAST majority will be unaffected.

    It must run its course.

Next hoax please - this one is getting old.

    Can try.

Not necessarily true. Probably not true.

    That's the logic, yes.

The jury's still out on that one. Whether or not it's a hoax, I mean. I don't think the virus is a hoax but I do believe the details probably are.

You want exact numbers on something that hasn't happened yet?

    What are you talking about...

40% of kids in that camp were infected in four days. If we send kids back to school that's what we can expect...and those kids WILL infect others (family, staff, etc)

How can you claim "many"? Just pull it from thin air?

That is my question to you. What are you talking about?

If "that hasn't happened yet" then there is zero back-up for your claim. NONE. Do you fully understand what it is you said? I really don't think you do. These are your own words > > >

The idea here is to speak in facts, not fantasy.

    I'd like more proof, too!!

But, the thing is, Trump wants data to be REDUCED. He's made current stats HARDER to obtain by filtering info through DHS before getting to CDC (requiring a week delay), and pushing AGAINST testing.

And, I'm not sure how one could POSSIBLY ignore a case study so close to the education question as is the OP.
