Can't count how many times I had interacted with police including a couple of "white guy in a black neighborhood" stops getting to factories through black areas. Simply be polite give them the ID ask what I am doing, tell them and get a "have a nice day".

 

Same here mostly. I've had some nasty encounters through no fault of my own (very messy divorce). I don't hate all LEOs and I don't blame them for what some other LEOs did to me. That is why I wrote Post #3.

Cat in New York selling loosies decided to resist arrest, had a heart attack and died on the way to the hospital, dude in Atlanta, ran from the cops and died. Running from the cops gives you a 99% chance of a bad outcome cussing them while you do it does not improve things. Treat cops like you do everyone else and your outcome will almost certainly be much better.

Maybe you're right. But considering the bad cop(s) might simply get a slap on the wrist for your complaint....doesn't really change his "bad attitude".
If enough people can see what those "bad cops" are doing, maybe then something will be done about them.
Even a few bad cops in a bunch can cause a lot of damage because the so called "good cops" are expected to back them up.

Fine. I think the problem here is that you have a substantial number of people on the BLM side calling for defunding of police departments, not "some" police departments, and not "improvement" of police departments, but "defunding the police," because "the police do this and the police do that," grossly generalizing and overestimating the extent of racism in our police departments and ignoring legitimate concerns of law enforcement.

But literally no one who "Backs the Blue" is publicly smearing all members of any group, other than violent protesters. Who on the right is calling for suppression of lawful, non violent assembly? Who on the right is on the streets denouncing African Americans or even supporting the officers arrested in the Minneapolis case?

I am loathe to just blame one side, but the left makes it hard to do otherwise.

 

Keep in mind that it's very easy for people to throw out blanket ideas without having any real understanding of the problem or practical ways to fix it. The protesters and rioters are worked up over their cause and seem to think their actions will cause change. It doesn't appear they understand they are going about it the wrong way and alienating people to their cause. In that sense, I sympathize with them because they don't get their actions are counterproductive.

The reality is there has to be some changes within the way LEOs deal with ALL people and especially those whom are regularly targeted for no reason other than the color of their skin, age bracket, style of clothing, etc.. Of course, someone will come along and say that police brutality doesn't exist which further fuels the anger and frustration people feel because they have experienced it. I've experienced it and I'm on the calmest and most cooperative people on the planet but that didn't matter to the responding officers. I don't begrudge the WHOLE department because of one or two rogue cops that are essentially grade school bullies that can't control themselves. Yet, I can understand the pain and frustration that comes from being hurt by the very people who take an oath to serve and protect.

The fact is there are no easy answers here. It may take a long time before people (on both sides) are willing to peacefully communicate to effect positive change so tensions do not escalate to the point where they are right now. Only time will tell if we can find a way to come together to make that change so ALL people can feel the police are professional, responsive and truly serving and protecting the people of their communities.
