It would seem DHS is illegally spying on protesters

"But an internal DHS document obtained by The Washington Post shows the department did have access to protesters’ electronic messages and that their conversations were written up in an “intelligence report” that was disseminated to federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, as well as state and local governments.

Current and former officials have said Murphy’s office may be exceeding the boundaries of its authority in an effort to crack down on “antifa” protesters to please President Trump

Sen. Angus King of Maine, an independent senator who caucuses with Democrats and co-signed the letter to Murphy, said...
“We were hearing through the press about what was going on . . . and we should have been hearing about it in the committee,” King said in an interview.

King said he was concerned that some I & A activities may not be “consistent either with the rule of law or the constitutional protections of privacy.”

Naughty, naughty. Rightys have been screaming that the government was improperly spying for years. I am sure they will be absolutely apoplectic over this.

    Any minute now.

Screaming, ripping out of hair, violent thrashing.

    Any second now...

Evidently, the Under Secretary (Murphy) has been reassigned within DHS. In other words the reporting is correct, the spying on protestors and journalists is true even though the Under Secretary testified to Congress that it wasn’t occurring. Barr’s mini me is taking the fall.

It’s difficult envisioning DHS—in it’s current form—surviving beyond this administration. The issues raised at its inception are bearing out. It’s time to disband the department.

Combine the department with the ridiculous national security outsourcing we do and it’s a recipe for disaster.

I'm just as opposed to it now as I was when Alex Jones first started exposing it 6 or more years ago.

Its just that its really old news now.

    https://www.prisonplanet.com/sacramento-sheriff-confronted-over-stingray-surveillance.html

But I am glad that its no longer being treated as a 'right wing nut job conspiracy theory.' Better too-late than never I guess.

I am not going to pay to access the Washington Compost so what claimed spying are you talking about?

What exactly are the issues you claim came up when DHS was created?

THE CREATION of DHS by Bush represented for the most part a reorganization of existing functions. Is this so hard to grasp?

For example the DHS agency ICE that liberals hate so much was 1/2 of INS that was part of the Dept. of Justice. INS was moved to DHS and split in two becoming ICE and CIS. The creation of INS goes back to 1933. Hardly anything new. The CBP that libs hate so much was part of the Treasury Dept. forever. The Border Patrol (part of CBP) goes back to 1924.

What agency of the DHS Department do you propose not survive. Be specific. Back up your claim with specifics or admit you don't know [expletive] about DHS.

You are using them as a source even though they have none listed?

Everybody makes mistakes. Not as many as crazy Right wing sources, but a few.

In any case, that addresses neither the accuracy or the content of the specifics in that article. Are you saying they lied abot what King said? No, you are not.

    Did DHS go too far?

    They've done it before.

"The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit Wednesday requesting that two US Homeland Security agencies -- Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement -- release details on how they've been using powerful phone surveillance tools.

The ACLU is suing after the two agencies declined to provide it with documents related to International Mobile Subscriber Identity, or IMSI, catchers, more commonly known as Stingrays.

The assertion comes despite the House Oversight Committee finding, in 2016, that ICE had spent $10.6 million on 59 IMSI catchers and CBP had spent $2.5 million on 33 of the devices."

So it's hardly unreasonable to think they are doing it again.

They're using drones also. I'm fine with that. Makes it easier to sort out who's a peaceful protestor and who's an enemy of the USA. Technology is gonna be used and used and used.

You didn't need a word salad to ask if I trust anything the WaPo says or prints? If it weren't backed by Bezos, it would have been out of business years ago. I am amazed it is not sitting on the rack as I check out of a supermarket.

Rule of Law is about balancing competing rights and interests.

As long as an intelligent balance is struck that protects the rights of the people, that works for me.

"....did have access to protesters’ electronic messages" - We have no idea what that means. Being vague is what WP's does. They make a claim that is actually not what it seems and if called on it, they say "well, it wasn't incorrect." As far as we know, this could be DHS reading their facebook or twitter posts. If DHS hacked their text messages on their phone or email, then that is wrong. However, if that was the case, why didn't WP just say that. They use terminology like "electronic messages" to make it sound covert when it may or may not be.........hoping that their "sheep" buy what they are selling.

What does WAPO mean by "electronic messages"? Because what I'm typing right now is considered an electronic message. If they mean something like this then big whoop. It's publicly accessed. If its from texting then that may be a problem depending on if they had a warrant or not.

IE: Need more information than just vague generalized wording.

So the same folks who were fine with our Intelligence Agencies illegally spying on Trump, his campaign, and Administration are suddenly outraged at monitoring of domestic terrorists?

DHS is a very large organization with multiple agencies. Odd how this isn't being portrayed as what it is, an immigration issue. Seeking out illegal aliens and deporting them is their job, it would be stupid to allow them to also participate in terrorist acts. This batch of liberal whining is just more open borders nonsense...

Protesters get arrested and released a few hours later. What the hell do you think DHS was doing? It’s called data mining. I guarantee text messages, emails, contacts and recent call history were all copied.
Hell only three states mandate a search warrant to search electronic devices anyway.

Thank you for the perspective, yes this is old news.

Am I supposed to be surprised when DHS spawn of 911 is circling overhead with a Stingray system in the plane? Seems like same old same old to me.

If Obama/Biden can do it through illegal FISA warrants, then anything goes.

K, but he was exposing this very issue 6 or more years ago. If more people had listened to him, this might not be a problem today. Is there anyone who is worth listening to that warned us this was happening?

He was also 'drama queening' about the dangers of some horrible virus killing hordes of people in China destined to make its way to the US roundabouts late december/early january this year.

    Also not important?
