Kamala Harris and Joe Biden have called for face masks to be mandatorily worn outside at all times in the USA for AT LEAST the next 3 months.

This is quite the call from Harris and Biden. I know it wouldn’t go down well in the UK. I am for measures to be in place to prevent the spread of Covid but this seems like a meaningless and pointless call for action. It makes you wonder what else they would force upon the public if they were to obtain power.

I wonder how Americans feel about this?

After the 4 yeas nonstop of the executive making EO or memorandums that they lack the authority to do you will be hard pressed to argue this is the line we cannot cross. I don’t understand how the same people screaming we need to completely open the economy and open the schools are against a small piece of fabric that would probably allow us to do so safely. (And the SCOTUS has already ruled a while ago that government can intervene when it is in the interest of public safety).

Ah wait, yes I do — anti-science party.

But great rant, really terrific! 3 stars.

I would have felt this was extreme overreach back in January/February.
Now, I think we all need to consider if we want to fight about it or get the country fully open as safely as possible.

Spent the weekend in Charleston where they have mandatory mask policy.. I'd say 30-40% of the people ignored the mandate...

The GOP and especially when they became sycophants for Trump, have done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the health of the American people and in fact have been detrimental to the health and well being of the American people.

    Sounds like a Great Idea.

That is what that IMBECILE (TRUMP) Should have done in February.

Before Trump became (personally) responsible for hundreds thousands of deaths due to the TRUMP VIRUS.

Good looking out by Joe and Kamala.:flagus:

    1. The federal government does not have such authority
    2. He did not say what exactly the mandate would entail. Most states already have mandates or some degree
    3. Instead of him answering question to the above he and Harris practically ran off the stage.

It was a pitiful performance and certainly did not lay out anything of a plan of any more substance than we are doing now.

Where does the federal government get the authority?
What does he mean by a mandate, what will it cover give me the details?
Why didn't he take questions and explain in more detail instead of running and hiding?
And back in February health experts were saying mask did not work AT ALL and made matters worse, I thought you want him to go by the experts and the science?

I think that having to wear a mask to go out would actually harm the economy. X amount of people wouldn’t want to wear a mask for hours on end so will end up not going out and spending money.

Where does the federal government get the authority to mandate mask be worn. Where is Biden trying to mandate they be worn, under what conditions? The vast majority of states of mandates of some form in order especially those with high population concentrations and geared toward THEIR PARTICULAR needs why does Biden think a one size fits all federal mandate the better way to go what does he know about a small town in Alaska with no cases of COVID?

I don’t know if they think they are coming across as sincere and caring about public safety or not but it makes no sense to come out with such a statement, it’s free ammunition. To me it comes across as pretty authoritarian and would be a concern that they would take such drastic action.

I think it’s still overreach. I’m not sure there is sufficient evidence to suggest that it would prevent the spread. It would slow it down but most people do not own a sufficient mask. Getting the economy moving requires confidence and I believe that mandatory masks would do the opposite.

Plus, how could it possibly be enforced or policed? All it would do is stoke tensions and create an atmosphere of hate towards those who do not wear them, even if it was for a medical reason.

I read your earlier comments on the impact on the economy. At this point, I think it's clear that nobody really has a handle on this thing. People are dying and even if it's fewer than other causes of death, the fact remains that it's a basically "silent" and indiscriminate killer. We are going into another season with us being no closer to a real, functioning plan and solution. Something has to give somewhere.

If nobody knows you don’t have a mask, then nobody will care. Happy to help.

Law enforcement sees me from 150 yards away and gives me a ticket and a $300. fine. Please explain the science of how society benefited from such an action.

It’s like a conundrum that cannot ever have a good outcome. If the absolute goal is to save lives from Covid, the economy will suffer and millions of people will be negatively affected by the fall out. If your absolute goal is to save the economy, an awful lot of people will die. It’s a no win situation on all fronts. As harsh as it sounds, I lean towards the economy because of the low(ish) death rate and my belief the economic impact will kill more in the long run and have severe social implications.

How exactly does that work? The feds do not have that authority. The 10th Amendment gives that authority to the states.

And don't get me wrong. I do wear a mask when going into places with people.

Too late for this Virus. I would have preferred that a good POTUS used his bully pulpit to convince people to use face face from this spring. Sadly we do not have a good POTUS we another guy.

The wearing of masks is a logical deterant to spreading this virus but I do not believe that a rule making wearing one everywhere outside your house is Constitutional.
