Massachusetts has always been liberal. Virginia was conservative. What every Founder would be shocked at is the POTUS calling the free press the enemy of the people.

Oh I lived in saner places but I always come back to New England. It's such a lovely place if you ignore the asinine politics. We've got four distinct seasons here and each one seldom goes to extremes, not too hot not too cold. There's rolling hills and mountains and the sea. I could never live more than an hour from the ocean or the mountains. Hunting and fishing is good although I don't do much of either anymore but I do love running the dogs through the woods especially in the winter. There's nothing like going out on a full moon night when the temperature is in the teens and the snow is frozen and sparkles. You can walk through the woods without a flashlight and it's just magical. I would miss things like that too much were I to move.

I'm Florida born and raised, if it hits 45 degree I'm bundled up like an Arctic expedition. Unfortunately, liberals love to move here. Maybe all the hurricanes caused by glo-bull warming will run them back home? But I hear you, I feel the same about the warm and the woods and swamps. I need to bag a hog this fall, been years.

Division is a liberal device, divide and conquer. I'm old enough to remember when America was all one thing, and by today's metric that one thing was conservative. It wasn't called conservative it was just the national consensus and remained so until the 1960s when communism invaded academia. Before that there where very few what you would call liberals. As liberalism spread so did all of the ills we suffer from now and it get's worse with every generation. Just take a look around you and behold the utter chaos thats taken hold of America. What's happening in Seattle, Portland, Chicago and New York could easily spread if not contained. These crazy children will reproduce and exponentially increase the insanity. The root of all of this is liberalism taken to an extreme. When you disdain and lose social controls society devolves, that is where we are now. It's no longer a right/left thing it's sanity versus evil. When the consensus is that morality is fluid and alterable civilization ceases to exist. Those that mock absolutes create chaos.

Pure nonsense. Trump thrives on division. It's all he's got. Biden is calling for unity, and he's getting it.

I'm old, too. I can remember the '60s and also remember it's now 2020. I can study history and realize progress always moves forward. And I was smart enough to know my neighborhood was nothing like The Andy Griffith show and a few years later, mature enough to laugh at Archie Bunker. And Fred Sanford.

I don't live in a dream world. Lots of Vietnamese immigrants in south Louisiana. Their kids work blue collar jobs, listen to rap, root for the Saints, enjoy sea fishing, love guns and speak with a looziana drawl. What they don't like is being blamed for the China virus by drunken Trumpists.

Sadly for Republicans, if they could get over the rap music, these Vietnamese-Americans are fairly conservative socially and politically. They would be ripe picking for Republicans, as well as millions of southern blacks, if only the Republican party were conservative.

Division is Trump's device, and everyone who follows him is guilty of dividing. I want unity, which is why I've supported Biden from the start.

Yeah, I lived in Florida for a time. Back then I lived in a quaint little backwater town that was delightfully southern and although I was a yankee I was treated like family in our little community. There were bayou like swamps that teemed with wildlife and gulf fishing that was some of the best I ever experienced. The weather had it's moments, there were a few times I remember where the humidity was so high you could almost drink the air and it was hot as hell. Most of the time it was just right especially the mornings. We had a local chapter of the Klan but I never saw any Klan activity and blacks and whites seemed to get along. All of my sweet memories there are gone. I've been back there and that little town is now ugly cookie cutter suburbia, crisscrossed with highways from which the view is endless strip malls and fast food joints. It looks just like a lot of other places in the US. It is so over built in places it seems like all of the rural countryside has been gobbled up. Lastly is the traffic, driving is an adventure. The worst thing about Florida is that people from all over discovered it and moved there.

There is still rural areas, my city is 4.2 sq miles, pop. 8K. 35 miles to the nearest bigger city. Trick is, (generally) stay away from the coast and stick to interior areas. Yes, the humidity and heat does get extreme especially as you age. We are surrounded by cattle and orange groves.

I don't fully understand what you are trying to say or ask but I will concentrate on the one area than seems clear. When you ask "Why are so many Americans afraid of being punished for their political views?" I assume you mean socially since I have not heard of government throwing people in jail for political views. Society really has no way of punishing someone that has not broken a law except to exclude you. For example you may hate or dislike someone for whatever reason, assuming that person has not committed a crime against you, but you cannot physically attack them because it is against the law. Really the only thing you can do is to exclude or ignore them. I guess you can verbally curse at them from time to time but that is kind of childish. This is what has led to cancel culture in the country. It is a way for individuals to organize and exclude someone for doing something they don't like. It has always existed, the difference is social media has made it more easily accessible and more effective. Governments do it when they impose sanctions. They could go to war but instead they choose to form a group or coalition and embargo or put sanctions on the offending country. They do this to punish the other country for what is perceived as bad behavior. People of both sides of the political spectrum do it. Recently Trump has called for a boycott of Goodyear products. I think many on this forum support it. What they are trying to do is punish Goodyear for behavior that is legal but they disagree with.

I am speculating that the reason you find this overwhelming is because society is always in a state of social and cultural change and you don't like the direction. This has always happened throughout history and often it is impossible to stop the change. For example interracial marriage became fully legal in all 50 states in 1967. In 2015 the Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states. There are many people currently that disagree with gay marriage and probably think that society would punish them if they made their views know. I wasn't alive in 1967 but I would assume that soon after the legalization of interracial marriage there were still many people that disagreed with it back then. But consider now over 50 years later no one from my generation or younger thinks twice about it or even realized that it was ever an issue. That is how social change works.

Massachusetts is like the UN, we have a lot of colleges and universities. We also have very liberal welfare policies along with being a sanctuary state so people come here from all over the world. This very little in the way of travel bans for those entering the US so naturally places like the northeast got slammed with Covid 19. It has nothing to do with Trump. Before it was even identified Massachusetts was inundated with it especially the Boston area. NYC got hit the worst but nobodies slamming Deblasio or Cuomo.

You can't blame the states for failures and give Trump credit for successes. If Trump wants credit for the pre-pandemic low unemployment, you have to hold him responsible for the current levels.

Liberal left really believes they are tolerant, until you disagree with them.

The argument is hypocrisy, not separation of powers. You understand my point, and obviously have no response.

I'm in awe, truly. How one man could sow so much hatred and division, yet blame it on another. And his followers swallow it whole.

If you're going to give Trump credit for good economic results, you have to hold him responsible for bad economic results. You want to credit Trump and blame governors. Hypocrisy. Your question is irrelevant.

Not answering the question and deflecting speaks volumes about your lack of an argument. The head of the executive branch of the fed has no direct control over local and state governments. The mayors and governors ARE allowing the situation to continue and they should be forced out of their offices, tried and put away for decades. Just like the rest of the democrat criminals ruining this country and destroying jobs and lives.
