The bottom feeders at CNN are going to make another person a millionaire because of their deceitful reporting practices. CNN calls itself the most trusted name in news, does anyone here, even liberals, believe that? And CNN isn't alone. NBC doctored a recording of Zimmerman to make him sound like a racist. ABC and MSNBC have also jumped the shark by reporting crazy stupid stories and theories. MSNBC also illegally reported on Trump's taxes and didn't bat an eye over it. I am truly hoping our media can be sued into being honest. And I truly believe if they were honest, a lot of liberals wouldn't be so quick to be liberal. An honest media would also eliminate a lot of the hate and division in we have in this country. This is a good and quick read. Check it out.
The only way these moronic media outlets are going to learn to knock off their deceitful bullcrap is through financial ruin. Even then, they probably won't learn a damn thing...being so bloody stupid. The American media's integrity has taken a serious nosedive over the last 20 years.
He claims no personal damage, and is suing for punitive damages only. The suit will go nowhere. That's the way it reads to me, anyway.
Regardless of the suit's merits, what do you think of CNN's behavior? Editing Dershowitz's comments to fit a narrative is not honest in the least.
Our rights come with great responsibilities. You can't yell fire in a movie theatre. The press should be held to the same standard.
"...or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press...". How did the simple language of the 1st Amendment morph into the "media" believing they are a sacred fourth branch of the government? Simply means they're free to print their garbage and we're free to ignore it. In fact I know of no law (correct me if I'm wrong here) that requires ANYONE to interact with them at any time. When they indulge in outright lies, slanders, and libels they need to be burned a brand spankin' new one.
It's editorial content, correct? I haven't seen the clip in question, so I can't say, but media outlets have some leeway in how they editorialize. I don't approve of extreme bias, but they're all guilty of it, and it always sticks out like a sore thumb. Doesn't effect my perception of the facts. Dershowitz seems to be claiming that because of CNN's actions, people think he said something he didn't. There's no way on earth he could begin to support such a charge.
Dershovitz has also launched a lawsuit against Netflix because of the documentary about Jeffrey Epstein. It will be recalled that Dershowitz had threatened to sue Virginia Giuffre if she publicly declared that she had had sexual relations with him as a minor. She claimed to have slept with him six times. Dershowitz sued her and never received a penny in damages. Another one close to Trump who falls into disgrace.
No, Sandmann is different. The attacks on Sandmann impacted his ability to earn a living. That's why the WP and CNN settled. Because he had a case. What CNN did to Dershowitz didn't cause him any damage at all. Indeed, for a man such as Dershowitz, it can be argued that any media exposure, including "negative" reports, can result in financial enrichment. Dershowitz is looking to punish CNN. It's not going to go well, IMO.
If Dershowitz has a case. So far, I haven't seen one. Just because you disagree with how the media portrays you doesn't mean the company owes you any money. If there's no slander or libel, it's just Dershowitz's opinion. I doubt any judge will order punitive damages for activity that caused no monetary damage to anyone. If I were CNN, I'd claim that any publicity Dershowitz receives helps to sell his books. It's all opinion. We're each entitled to our own. You can't sue because some people may see a news report differently than others.
Maybe you're a lawyer and know your way around these things, but I'm not. Dersh is a lawyer, so I'm going to assume he knows what he's doing. At the very least he's making it known how dishonest CNN is.
No argument here, but the basics of these things are understandable by all of us. If CNN's actions had resulted in Dershowitz losing a book contract, for example, he would have a case. Dershowitz is giving his opinion of CNN; yes, that's apparent. That he and you think CNN is dishonest doesn't mean other people view them as such. He can afford to take it to court. Gets him free publicity. I just don't see a judge awarding punitive damages because Dershowitz disagrees with a CNN editorial. It's highly ironic, and therefore suspect, that Dershowitz is riding the free speech bandwagon, while attempting to punish CNN for exercising that free speech. According to the OP, Dershowitz isn't claiming CNN lied. If they had, he would demand a retraction. Has he? No, it looks like Dershowitz is saying that his words were selectively edited to make it appear he was saying something he didn't. That's a subjective opinion that cannot be proven outside of CNN coming out and saying, "Yes, that's what we did." We'll see, but I don't think it's gonna work. I don't think Dershowitz intends it to work. This is a special kind of publicity that has been popular among a few Republicans whose names I forget at the moment. Again, we'll see.
If it's a politically motivated publicity stunt, which I think it is, it will end quickly. I don't know Dershowitz's history regarding this type of litigation, so I can't predict one way or the other. What I do know is Trump threatens to sue everybody and Devin Nunez sued someone because of a cow. This Dershowitz case looks no different to me, so barring any evidence to the contrary, that's how I'm gonna see it.
