I didn't say that. Even this article shows they didn't know if the Flynn-Russian discussion furthered the conspiracy theory (it didn't). They presumed it(wished is actually a better word given what we know).

Of course Trump knew, he tapped Flynn to be his NSA! The only one besides Flynn who I could foresee having that discussion would be VP Pence or SOS Pompeo(Actually then Tillerman at the time. What a hoot that would've been given this agency's behavior during Crossfire Hurricane). As a matter of fact the Mueller Investigation was begun because Trump fired Comey BECAUSE of HIS investigation into Trump and Russia.

Interestingly that FBI investigation DID go away after Trump fired Comey

 

Actually we have since learned that Rosenstein had his thumb heavily on that investigation regarding its direction and actions.

Mueller was far from independent
