To fluorescents which were a total bust and everyone hated them. Incandescents are are back now because that ban failed and the the free market created LED's to compete against them and which ARE a better bulb and would have come about without any bans.

Ya and they wonder where all that magic electricity comes from.. I suspect the planet will be a covered in giant propellers and sheets of shiny solar panels.. How lovely the electric car will be ;)

But in CA the demand will increase even faster. And again the real problem is CA doesn't have enough space to build enough wind farms and solar power to meet current needs let alone millions of cars and trucks.

The point is that all fuels are environmentally dirty and fossil fuel energy is more dirty than "clean" energy

Californians are waiting for technology so they can turn their lights on. One would have thought that Newsome would learn from Governor Brownout's renewable non-dispatchable power fiasco.

Doesn't matter. We've been smoked out by California's wildfires. Seems like we should be able to sue Newsome for the health problems he's caused the country and the GHG's and Climate Change California has caused the world.

Another grand liberal idea that will adversely effect the poor. Undoubtedly the gas taxes will increase, as sales are reduced by volume. Not to mention the state's inability to produce adequate power to charge all these cars. Another California pipedream that will be forgotten long before it is realized...

By 2035, I don't think anybody will be using gas powered cars. There will hardly be any fossil fuel left by then, with current population growth rate and what's left of the worlds oil supply. We are going to be facing far more serious problems than what cars are legal to buy by then if we do not start taking steps to lower global population immediately.

And they need to jack up the tax on gas to reduce gas usage and popularize public transportation.

I'm pretty sure most all electrics already use solid state lithium based batteries.

    Certainly Teslas do.

not yet, but soon - even your phones, watches, everything will use them

    https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a31409442/samsung-solid-state-battery-revealed/

"For years, solid-state batteries have been heralded as the answer to many of the issues surrounding EVs. The battery technology allows for greater energy density, which translates into more range from the same size pack as a lithium-ion battery. The problem has been that the failure rate is far too high after repeated charging. Also, they’re super expensive. But Samsung may have solved the first issue."

they are better, and as a bonus won't burst into flames like current lithium based batteries when exposed to air

once they prefect them, you won't even be allowed on a plane with the old battery

    https://www.androidauthority.com/lithium-ion-vs-solid-state-battery-726142/

"The key difference between the commonly used lithium-ion battery and a solid-state battery is that the former uses a liquid electrolytic solution to regulate the flow of current, while solid-state batteries opt for a solid electrolyte. A battery’s electrolyte is a conductive chemical mixture that allows the flow of current between the anode and cathode."

LA still has a smog problem, significantly reduced since Covfefe-19 social distancing measures.

However, California is not to be dismissed for the importance of its contributions toward cleaner air and water in the US.

Its native son Tricky Dick actually accomplished some good things.

The US EPA was formed under his term in office.

Acid rain due to sulfur emissions was pretty quickly brought under control, although a lot of the reductions were due to steep declines in US steel and other manufacturing industries.

Air quality improvements due to the decline in US manufacturing leads me to digress and mention this,

At the time I think his trade initiatives with China were popular among both Ds and Rs - certainly among Rs,

some of whom around PF love to blame China trade policies on the Ds.

Nope - thank Cali-born Nixon for China and the EPA.

Cool - Thanks for the lesson.

I think the tech would more aptly be named ceramic or glass batteries based on this page,

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery#Electrolytes

That diagram though seems a bit misleading.

It seems to show a conventional lead-acid battery type.

Li-ion battery electrolytes are apparently a sort of polymer gel.

Fascinating stuff material science is to me, thanks again.

Hopefully technology will help a bit with that problem, but yeah, the REAL problem facing this planet is overpopulation. It is the root cause of most of our other problems. We are entering a period where technology and resources will be unable to keep up with exponential population growth.

Which is why we have ethanol in our gasoline that does nothing for the environment but kills engines.

Yeah that makes sense in California and other desert states but electric cars suck every where. They are alright for short commutes but that is about it.

And clogs the hell outta carbs on small engines. We have a station selling ethanol free 93 octane, my friends says his truck shifts better and a huge increase in mileage. We should ban California.

I'm not a big fan of social engineering.

Enacting policy to artificially adjust pricing to drive behavior reeks of facism.

    No thanks.
