He used the tax codes that Obama implemented. And this is what businesses do. And tax data doesn't give you all the details. It just gives a lump sum of information. Anyone who owns a business understand this. DEMS and media are blowing this way out of proportion. And uneducated anti Trump folks are just eating it up. If there is a legit complaint that's one thing. But this is a nothing burger.

It's almost as if Dems don't use tax deductions themselves. If they want to be believed, this isn't the fight to do it with.

This reminds me of what Stephen Colbert said many years ago, so true: "However dilatory or devious in their own dealings with the taxman, Americans are merciless in moral posture towards the public figures exposed as having done the same thing."

Not just politicians are prone to hypocrisy.

Congress enacted the income tax laws and Trump adhered to them. What's the problem media?

And yet when we ask why Obama did not close those "loopholes," the left says whataboutism and never accepts the blame. It was theirs to fix and they whine now because they didn't, but now make it sound like Trump was defrauding Uncle Sugar. We do it too but don't look at us but Trump!

    Riiiiiiight.

YOU DO NOT KNOW THAT DIRTY DPONALD ADHERED TO THE TAX CODES !!!Just as we on the left are PRESUMING HIS GUILT you on the RIGHT ARE PRESUMING HIS INNOCENSE. He can easily clear it up by releasing his tax returns as every other presidential candidate since Nixon has.

Anyone who can make that much money and legally pay little to no tax on it deserves a standing ovation.
You, sir, are a steely-eyed missile man.

Are we accepting the NY Times story as true now? I thought it was fake news?

The information is, as far as I can tell, true.
The characterization of that information, by the Times and the useful idiots that parrot it, is "fake news".

Never mind the fact that every single person voting in the 2020 election would also legally avoid paying federal income taxe, if they could.
Assuming they pay them to begin with, I mean.

I haven't read the NY Times article. My information comes from various news clips. I thought the article does not show the tax returns. What piece of information from the article swayed you into believing their story? Trump has said the story is fake news and he had paid a lot of taxes in those years.

It does not show the returns - but the NYT has too much to loose in lying about them, so for the moment I will take their word on their claims of fact.

Barack Obama did not push a tax bill.

I suppose you never heard of a forensic accountant. Someone who can sift through the financial records and tax records of an organization (or rat’s nest of paper ones like Trump’s) and figure out what really went on.

Weak excuse making is better than denial in the face of well documented fact, I suppose.

    It’s all you have.

The Trump tax return story has legs because so much of it was already known.

First of all, only Trump’s most ardent supporters actually credit anything coming out of this White House. Trump blew any credibility he may have had a long time ago. And he has devalued his office, and surrounded himself with yes men who have little credibility either.

    So there’s that.

As to the credibility of the Times’ story.

It has credibility because most of the key points have already been documented. We already knew about his screwing partners and subcontractors. We already knew he is one of the few businessmen on earth who managed to lose money spectacularly in the casino business.

We already knew about his pathetic campaign to build a Trump Tower Moscow.

We already knew that his golf courses lose money hand over fist.

And we already knew about the fact that he is dependent on Russian banks and banks the depend heavily on Russian money laundering.

None of this was new news.

Just about the only new news is that much of Trump’s debt appears to be about to come due.

Of course, there is one way that Trump could definitively make liars out of the New York Times.

But we all know that isn’t going to happen.

There seems to be a $70 million question over whether that is true or not.

But then you didn’t actually read the article. And Fox and Rush weren’t going to bring that up!

    False.
He pushed a bill to extend Bush's "tax cuts for the rich" for 2 years, after which the tax code returned to what it was in 2000.
    His words:
"We are here with some good news for the American people this holiday season," The Obama said.
The Obama said the bill would create jobs and boost the still-struggling U.S. economy - He called it a "substantial victory for middle class families".
Not sure how all of this can come from extending a "tax cut from the rich", but that's what He said.

The IRS uses these for audits.
How many times had Trump been audited? What did they find?

Trump was right in saying he’s being audited, but went no farther. There is a dispute over a 73+ million return and this has been going on for roughly a decade.

It appears Trump was playing fast and loose with the code. He’s a tax fraud: lost at the civil level twice.

However, the issue is his debt. What and who we should have known from day one. The fact he didn’t divest combined with the debt is a major security risk.

Now his strange behavior on the foreign policy front is going to be raked over the coals to determine if it’s related to his debt.

No wonder he hasn’t released his returns. They show he’s reckless, a horrible businessman, a major security risk, and not who he represents himself to be. Just the type of guy we want in the WH:(

Be cautious -- Dan Rather had a fake document he used against Bush and the NYT could have fake copies of Trump's income tax returns.

It wasn’t his idea. The GOP wanted to make it permanent, and was willing to shut down the entire Federal government in the middle of the biggest economic collapse in living memory to do that.

Ummm..... all of that should have been obvious to any informed voter in 2016.

Trump’s spectacular failures in business were all reported in the business press over the years.

His defaults, his cheating, his lies, and his managerial incompetence.

When Trump rode the esculator and claimed he was worth $10 billion, Wall Street laughed out loud.

His dependence on Russians for all his financing was no secret either.
