That's a conspiracy theory. Hospital billing procedures have been curious for decades. There have always been loopholes and questionable practices. To suggest that hospitals are now conspiring out of greed, during a pandemic, because treating covid patients is more costly than treating flu patients, to make a political point supporting the president; well, that's just too much to swallow.

Hospitals are being overrun. Workers are exhausted, overwhelmed, and many overcome with grief. To suggest they're involved in a scam to make money and punish Trump is pretty shameful, IMO.

 

The I-Team found eight cases in which a person was counted as a COVID death, but did not have COVID listed as a cause of contributing cause of death.

These were mistakes, and according to the article, are being corrected, and probably already corrected and removed by the Department of Health.

They're not abusing it. Virtually all activity is strictly following the state and federal guidelines regarding the pandemic. No one has shown anything else occurring. There have been mistakes, and there are always dishonest people, even in medicine, but there is no massive scam here. It's an excuse for Trump's failure to contain the virus. Just a last minute Hail Mary. He probably has a few more. Three days.

Hospitals make more money out of elective surgery so why would they cut off their main stream of income by over-reporting Covid cases?

 

I dunno about 'doctors', but hospitals get federal funding per confirmed case and per ventilator used. It stands to reason some doctors probably get some of that money, at least in a roundabout fashion, creating an incentive for fraud.

 

This is precisely why they are losing money. Scheduled procedures have been postponed because of the pandemic.

It's a sad day in America when so many people, on the word of one man, view our medical community through a twisted, shameful and nonsensical political lens. I've seen doctors and nurses break down on TV. Yeah, they're crying because of money. Shameful Trump. Typical, and sad.

Nobody has found any fraud, and no doctor is going to risk his license by fudging numbers during a pandemic, for a pittance.

How hospitals are reimbursed is a matter of law. It doesn't provide an incentive for fraud.

I wasn't contesting that government is subsidizing covid cases. I was talking about your implication that fraud is being committed by claiming gun shots to the head are listed as covid deaths. Those were mistakes, not fraud.

 

If someone is diagnosed or suspected with Covid the extra 20% payment will not be enough to cover the extra cost of treatment and staff; Covid patients have to be isolated or kept far apart unlike non-covid patients and you can treat more patients and need less staff for non-covid patients

This may come as a shock but the management of hospitals are just as concerned with making money as any other entity. They look for ways to cut costs and maximize profits. They wouldn't last long if they didn't. I suppose big pharma are all saints too? give me a break. The doctors and nurses working at the hospital may be wonderful people, but the people handling the money are no better or worse than any other businessman. I'm not saying they are evil, just standard profit oriented businessmen. To think otherwise is pretty naive.

 

I don't know about your hospitals, but here all electives are on hold. My wife had to wait 6 months for surgery that she absolutely needed because they are so backed up. I think they'll take money where they can get it.

 

Which is the reason why hospitals would be better off not over-reporting Covid cases. In fact, they would be better off hiding cases and then reporting that they have spare capacity to start elective surgery

 

They're being accused of massive fraud, not being good businessmen. And it's the doctors and nurses who sign the death certificates, not hospital brass.
