I just noticed I am getting more and more ads on youtube. I have a feeling the time spent on ads is almost the same as watching video clip. Which alternative services do you like?

Yeah they've gotten bad recently. Always 2 ads at the start of the video, one of them unskippable.

Still, I feel that YouTube is the best video service out there. I watch far more YouTube than I do Netflix, despite having a paid subscription to the latter.

While there are obvious issues with demonitisation and the such, I also feel they're one of the more permissive social media networks out there - and its users are far closer to the mix of actual society than the echo chamber of Twitter.

    Same here.

They're hammering me with Google Nest Ads.

They couldn't give me a new car to take one.

If more people use and visit alternative video sites, those will grow.

This happened with Twitter alternative, Parler.

Twitter may become a relic in a few years.

I suggest you take a look at DTube

It looks a LOT like YouTube but needs a LOT more content.

If people just start using it, it will take off and become a great alternative

    Netflix, Hulu, Prime.

Youtube is still *barely* worth watching for tutorials and music videos. I couldn't begin to describe how many things I've fixed by watching 'how' on youtube first, and all my mp3's on my phone are downloads from youtube (I buy the LP's for wall art, so I'm not a pirate XD ).

But other than those two purposes, I avoid youtube.

They're trying to pressure people into paying for the service. If you pay a monthly fee, the ads go away.

I wasn't aware that some people didn't know that lol.

Anyways, Youtube gets a majority of it's content from paying people depending on how many people follow that user and content. That person then becomes available to select advertisers who use their viewers for advertising.

Essentially advertisers pay Youtube to get people to produce content. Youtube takes that advertising money and doles it out to people with the more popular content getting more money.

Youtube gets a cut. If you simply pay the monthly fee then you are also supporting the user content so you don't have to watch the ads.

The point is that everyone bitching about the ads don't seem to realize that it is because of the ad money that Youtube exists.

You see other sites that don't pay people for content.....you don't get much there and never will.

Adblock plus the browser pop up blocker in combination works okay with keeping ads to a minimum. Occasionally one will slip through on youtube but not nearly as bad as without those blockers. Adblock works better if you don't do the default settings and set it to strict filtering.

The irony for me is that I used to click on ads to create revenue for websites I visited as I was leaving them but they started getting so aggressive and flooding me with them that I resorted to ad blockers. If a site breaks itself so you cannot see any content with adblock, then I just find an alternate site.

I'm Mr. Cheapo. I have a smart tv connected to an antenna in the attic and a Roku on another. Only thing I'm "paying" for is my Amazon Prime membership which includes the Prime video. I'm considering adding the Criterion pay channel. Otherwise I can live with commercials for free content.
