As the debate about mask mandates rages on, I thought it was interesting to note that of the 10 riskiest states to visit over Christmas 7 of those 10 riskiest states have mask mandates and an 8th state has a partial mask mandate (in their biggest cities.) Only two states on the list have no mask mandate.

What does this say about mask mandates? :confuse: I'll let you all decide for yourselves ;)

I've been consistently opposed to mask mandates, and my state (Florida) does not have one. We also began reopening in May and fully reopened in September, and yet we're faring pretty well, whereas the alarmists would have you thinking we should have all died by now down here, especially with our elderly population. (Note, I'm not opposed to people wearing masks whenever/wherever they want, I am generally opposed to mask mandates and I'm vehemently opposed to shutdowns.)

So what good does a mask mandate really do? And why aren't more states without mask mandates on the list of the 10 riskiest? Things to ponder.....

Then there is this in Utah: "The number of new daily Covid cases in Utah has dropped 18% since last month, when Governor Gary Herbert imposed an emergency declaration that includes a statewide mask requirement", but three paragraphs later: "Positivity [in Utah] has been rising for the past two consecutive weeks."

Oh, and for the folks who like to politicize this stuff, the 10 states are about 50/50 blue/red.

Are you curious about the list? Here you go:

    1. Tennessee
    2. Rhode Island
    3. Arizona
    4. Indiana
    5. California
    6. Pennsylvania
    7. Utah
    8. Delaware
    9. Oklahoma
    10. Nevada

When were the mandates brought in - before or AFTER the spread was so blindingly obvious even the most obtuse could see there was a problem or before?.

Meanwhile here in my part of Aus we just hit 100 days with zero community transmission

It’s common practice in red and blue states to implement further mitigation after case rates are already falling. Then they claim the mitigation “worked” even though rates in a neighboring state etc. fall comparatively without added mitigation.

The lies told by the “experts” here last winter pretty much shot any chance we had. We could have been Australia or South Korea. But it was easier to lie than do the hard work to stop a pandemic.

As you say, less than 100% effective (ie. masks, partial lockdowns, etc.) mitigations only work well before community spread is large scale. Lying about mask efficacy, positive effects of border closures, and potential (certainty) of asymptomatic and presymptomatic spread early on in the US guaranteed failure.

Yep. Our “experts” weren’t experts. Mitigation worked for you and others because you didn’t have our “experts”.
