Should there be a public option for hosting web services?

Years ago, there was a program to convert a PC into a webserver. I remember such a thing around the year 2000.

So, I did a search on YouTube. and lo, it still can be done.

So, DIY and you are the boss. But, I don't know how you could build something like Parler on it, you'll need some IT guys to get you there.

And this guy built is own ISP from his garage

No matter if they are public or private options, all of them are administered by humans based on the acceptance of their terms. Just like this forum we are on right now; we are encouraged to respond our opinions but we will be censored and/or banned if we cross the line. And this 'line' can be a moving target as administrators and goals and participants, etc. evolve. No matter what platform exists, public or private, in order to maintain the intent of said platform, no one will be allowed to do anything they wish...

The Dark Web is not illegal. As a matter of fact, it was developed by our government. Originally to provide a channel of communication related to espionage, which was never realized (as far as we know). Later by Human Rights organizations to allow advocates to communicate anonymously. The large majority of activity in the Dark Web is not illegal. But there is no reason for ISPs to identify who is using the dark web. And it would be costly. BTW, they could detect that you're using it. But not what you are accessing on it if you use proper stealth techniques.

At least for a public option those humans who administer the service could be held accountable by the voters. In the private sphere, they are only accountable to the share holders.

BTW: Government could charge for the service, just like they charge for toll roads.

How much 'accountability' do you see of our public servants? My answer...almost none!

The root problem, no matter if public or private, is the collective we are incapable of remaining reasonable and/or following rules/laws. When people are involved just give them enough time to screw it up!

No need. There are tons of servers overseas to fill the void. Most could care less of the content and are usually out of reach of the grubby hands of our Government and large corporations.
