The US senate can do a lot for unity by voting unanimously voting to convict Trump; then falling in line behind the new president like a good little American. I never loved Trump but I did nothing to interfere with his presidency beyond the impediments I could legally place in his way by voting for candidates who wouldn't support his evil agenda.
And there needs to b e really stiff sentences handed out to any and all that participated in the invasion and destruction and thefts from the Capitol. They should squeeze as much financial restitution as humanly possible out of perps as well as prison where appropriate.

Who invented without any proof that the elections had been rigged? Who did everything to fanaticize his base against Biden/Pence leading to a murderous riot on Capitol Hill? Who insulted for 4 years all those who had the slightest dissenting thought towards the GOP? Who had an 85% staff turnover rate because he was unable to work with anyone? Who is going to leave the WH without attending the inauguration of his successor and never even talking to him to ensure a normal transition?

That would also be an appropriate response to rioters who invade, vandalize, loot, or burn businesses, no matter what the cause.
The first step is to stop looking at opposing views as evil. The righteous mind is a product of our environment. Some of us are born where hamburgers are common food while others can't believe others eat a sacred animal. If you see opposing views as evil, you must accept that your own views are the same in their eyes. The path to unification is giving up on forcing our beliefs on others. The only way to do that is to reduce government power through lower taxes. That way, people can believe that being gay, owning a gun, having an abortion, smoking a plant, etc are evil without infringing on the rights of others.

In a nutshell - Just heard an interview of one of the police officers who was dragged down into the crowd and beaten, he thought he was going to die ... luckily, there were a few calmer heads in the crowd that got him to safety ... his response to those people who helped him was classic and encompasses the whole event - "Thank you for helping me, but **** you for being there in the first place."
I think it is. If we as a society are treating the same crimes differently because of our political biases, we are wrong. It happens, and we are wrong when we do it.

When a Republican is in power, leftists recite "dissent is the highest form of patriotism" and "Resistance!", and then when a dem is in power, it's "let's all fall in line behind the president".
