In my view, if McConnell goes back to his old obstruct-everything ways, as much as the argument says it's a bad idea, dems should do it.

First thing, in a conversation I heard with a senator and Chuck Todd this morning on MTP, he senator was talking about how McConnell was trying to get Schumer to codify the filibuster ( it's not ) , and given the fact that it's not something McConnell himself would agree to, the noted that Schumer would not agree to it, but it begs the question, why was he trying to get the filibuster codified? Well, the inescapable conclusion is that he's afraid Schumer is going to nuke the filibuster, which, if accomplished, would render McConnell completely powerless. There is nothing more excruciating for the minority leader than to know that he is completely powerless. His only leverage now is that filibuster ( aside from the budget reconciliation process workarounds ) which would affect much of what the dems want to accomplish.

I found it amusing that he tried to do that, knowing that he must know that Schumer isn't that stupid to agree to something like that.

All I can say to McConnell is, the crows have come home to roost....on thee

Off the bat, I'd say no. Schumer should use it as a bargaining chip, though.

There are too many Democrats who are opposed to eliminating the filibuster, because they know that they will eventually be in the minority again. Besides, it’s a 50/50 split. Controversial things are t going to pass the senate.

Democrats have a very hypocritical view of the filibuster rule. When they are in the the majority they oppose it. When they are in the minority they are unanimously in favor of it.

How so? What rules did he impose to silence the minority when the Republicans were in the majority?

Let's take a closer look at history:

For years, the filibuster was reserved for only serious proposals that the opposite were passionate in opposing, which
required standing at the podium and talking until the clock ran out, in order to block a vote.

Then they got rid of the standing at the podium for hours requirement, and reduced it a clerical move, and it was done.
When that was done, republicans filibustered EVERY judicial appointment under obama, and anything else they could.

Reid had no choice but to nuke the filibuster so that the positions would get filled, as backlogs were mounting, and it was a disservice to America that they would block the appointments, no matter how hard Obama would try and find someone centrist that republicans would accept. They did this for bench appointments only, because those were urgent, as SCOTUS appointments weren't urgent, the filibuster was left intact and Reid left it intact for legislation, as well. Note the Reid could have nuked the filibuster for Scotus and for legislation, but he didn't.

then repubs gained control of the senate and when Trump was elected, the repubs started to fill those blocked appointments, which was the strategy all along. Then, in a tit for tat, McConnell nuked the filibuster for SCOTUS appointments, blaming the nuke on dems.

The fact remains, in my view, either they return the filibuster to his former glory or get rid of it altogether, because in it's current state, it's an albatross on the senate.

But, obstruction by republicans is what got the ball rolling, in the first place, let's make no mistake about that fact.

The last time dems had the white house, repubs filibustered everything:

We're back, McConnell is minority, and the crows are coming home to roost for his prior obstructionism, and the point I was making, if he should RETURN to his obstructionism, it's time that dems ended the filibuster altogether, or return it to its' former glory, which required someone standing at the podium for hours in order to run out the clock. That fact gave a big disincentive to filibuster, unless is was something you were passionately against, that you would go through that kind of trouble.

notice it's not a front burner issue IMMEDIATELY AFTER the election?
we have the luxury of time for getting issues right on any back burner matters while focusing on crisis priorities dumped at our feet.

funny how the righty mantra of 1 PERSON - 1 VOTE! immediately vanished when they ripped an election by denying millions of legit votes.
now those same voter suppression artists are screaming about having lost the cleanest election in our history! how precious lol
please never stop the diatribes! it's the sound of America WINNING again.

Democrats do what democrats do. Use the cudgel of power to destroy everything around them. Then wonder what went wrong. Classic.

No, they just want the vote to reflect the will of the people.

    People vote, states do not.

60 judges, many appointed by republicans, some appointed by Trump, found no merit to the argument that 'democrats stole the election'.

So, that argument does not, therefore, have merit.

Mailing out ballots encourages more people voting.

Apparently you have a problem with democracy.

    Yeah, right:
Note the last time dems had the senate and the white house, and repubs used the filibuster to 'cudgel' democrats. then repubs 'cudgeled' dems by stealing the seat destined for Merrick Garland and gave it to Neil Gorsuch.
Please abstain from lecturing this forum about said 'cudgeling'.

That’s not true. Now, instead of avoiding the question, tell me what measures the Republicans took to silence the minority when they had the majority in the Senate?

I am surprised that the democrats are not making giving DC and PR statehood status their #1 priority. DC has already gone through congress. Unless a democrats votes against it don't they have the votes to make DC a state right away? DC would almost guarantee 2 more senate seats for the democrats and PR would probably vote that way in the short run at least.

The Senate does not function anymore in this hyperpartisan time. It cannot pass bills that actually accomplish anything. We need to ditch the filibuster.

Well, the Kamal has the deciding vote on stuff that gets to the floor. The committees are even, so the GOP can prevent anything from getting to the floor. They won't because they are Americans. <COMMENTS EDITED>

I answered your question, 'how so?' ( you asking 'how so---the crows are coming home to roost on McConnell' and the answer to that question is implied in the OP, that nuking the last remaining filibuster is 'the crows coming home to roost on McConnell [because the last time we had the presidency and the senate McConnell abused the filibuster, or at least he filibustered during Obama's presidency more than any other time in history ] ) Now, your second question is not related to the OP, so it's OT, unless there's something I'm missing, you tell me.
