They should be the last option, of course. Due to the grave negative effects (both financial and psychological). But they most definitely work to stop the spread of the virus when there is no other alternative.

As of right now, we have better alternatives in most places. Hopefully we can remove politics from the pandemic and get people to use those alternatives. Because, if applied consistently, they work far better than lockdowns. But that doesn't mean that lockdowns don't work.

Anyway, as to the OP, obviously these steps are the only way to REALLY give People a Chance to get things "Back to Normal"

Of course, in a Trumpian World (where people are told to inject disinfectants), there will always be those who will deny masking, say "Covid is no big deal", and refuse the Vaccine because they (sincerely) believe that the Covid Vaccine will contain a Gov't Microchip that will turn them into a Zombie.

We will probably need annual Covid shots, but as hundreds of millions of people are vaccinated I would expect to see the numbers of new infections to drop to a much lower number than they are now.

FWIW, I don’t resist wearing a mask, but having immunity is the key.

 

We've done all that and the virus still did what viruses do. It ran it's course for the last 10+ months and now seems to have peaked a couple of weeks ago and now declining. Masks, lockdowns, contract tracing seems to have made no difference.

Well... I could show videos of Trump claiming that they are not necessary and even mocking people who wear them. Which might explain why it's the guy in the MAGA hat the one who isn't wearing a mask. But the point was that for all those people around him, wearing masks is useless to stop the pandemic unless EVERYBODY in that plane wears them. And that is one thing we haven't tried as a nation.

BTW, that Trump is "bad" (to use your euphemism) is not "reverting". It's "evolving". And be prepared for more and more facts illustrating this in the future. Euphemisms will not save him from being held accountable for his crimes.

Of course it is an opinion. He says that lockdowns slow the virus. In order for that to be fact he would have to compare it to the same time frame without lockdowns. Not possitlvle He wasn't stating a fact. He was stating an opinion because there is no fact. I hope I taught you something.

The alternative is to fight the virus the best you can without introducing a new unrelated crisis to the existing crisis.

So you still believe in Aristotelic science which was based on induction and not deduction. It would require too many lessons in epistemology to explain to you how modern science works. But let me give you a hint: it would NOT require comparing the disease spread for the same time frame in the same place with and without shutdowns. That's how science would have worked at the time of Aristotle. So you're only about... 2400 years behind.

That would be, by far, the best alternative. But that doesn't mean that lockdowns don't work.
