a relevant passage is Article II, Section 2, in the so-called “Commander-in-chief clause.” The president, it says, “shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.” we're left to interpret this, but pardons can't stand which were issued as paybacks for favorable past criminal activity anyway.

I think this is a point that could be argued. But it would only apply to the direct actions for which he was impeached.

He appears to have stayed away from pardoning anybody who might implicate him in the crimes for which he was impeached. Maybe to allow them to claim 5th A protection. By which they would protect him. But I don't remember seeing anybody who might have participated either in the calls to insurrection that led to January 6, or the extortion of President Zelensky. Surprisingly, he didn't pardon Giuliani. And he would be the one implicated in both crimes. This allows him to plead the 5th to protect Trump.

That's an interesting take. I don't know enough about Constitutional law to see if this interpretation has legal merit, but I sure would like to know if someone does try it.

It means the president cannot pardon impeachments, not that an impeached president can't pardon.

What Article II, Section 2 means is that the president can't pardon someone that has been impeached. You can't overturn a presidential pardon. That would be double jeopardy.
