They vote all the time within the federal district where they live even for President. Why do you think enough state legislators will agree to this? Heck enough members of Congress. The reasons for it being a federal district have not changed since it was established.

The federal government would have to. They would be at the mercy of the governor of Douglas, the proposed name I believe, for security and protection. Can't allow that so a BIG wall would be necessary.

Why don't the democrats just vote to make every black person their own state? That's all this is about anyway. A power grab that can't be taken away.

    My friend,

20 years from now it won’t make any difference if you live in United States or in Tabasco.

    If the Democrats succeed.

These people are truly wall happy.... and it doesn't really matter if you are keeping somebody in or somebody out...

There seems to be some bizarre school of thought that if the 90% of populated DC became a state, suddenly they'd want to "invade" the federal regions, which they could easily do now if they wanted to. But that's reserved for the primarily out-of-state seditionists...

Another fun thought I've read on here is the 712K DC residents should just move somewhere else if they want Congressional representation. No.... I'm serious....

Haven't seen 1 decent argument against this bill yet... doubt I will....

I will be honest, I am not ready to give DC a state status just yet. I want to hear all the arguments for and against. Currently we have an ideal setup. Not sure if there can be some compromise of representation.

I was thinking about that. Why not give D.C. TWO VOTING congressmen, but no Senators.

Or lobby to improve your home, people shouldn’t have to move because they want rights.
Republicans struggle to understand this it seems.

    PR is next. Maybe AS

I wonder why y’all are so scared of more people having representation?

    How ironic.

They are moving out; to their own state. DC will still be there, just without residents.

how many illegals under Bush, Obama, Trump ( per four years )?

the reality is, it's people like Trump giving them jobs, that is the reason illegals come

The federal Constitution gives small rural states far too much power in the Senate. Right now, with a 50-50 tie, the Democrats represent over 40 million more citizens than do the Republican Senators. As a result, the Senate as currently constituted will more often have a Republican majority than a Democratic one. As a result, Republican presidents have almost unbridled control in nominating the vast majority of federal judges.

If the Democrats were ever to find their guts it is now. Schumer needs to channel his inner-McConnell and ensure his entire caucus votes for DC statehood. Then, he needs to dig deep and again channel his inner-McConnell and ensure his entire caucus votes for PR statehood. The Republicans will still have an advantage, but the extra four Senators would shrink that advantage and give the Democrats a chance of wresting control of the Senate more often then they do now.

Make it happen. If the filibuster needs to be destroyed, so be it. If Schumer isn't able to make it happen, he should be replaced with someone who can make it happen. They only have two years. It is likely the Republicans will get the Senate back in 2022 otherwise.

I guess that all depends on your perception. Taken together with Schumer's threat to pack SCOTUS and I'd venture to guess that the problems are just beginning.

The seat of government has to be contiguous, but as @Egoboy says it does not have to be 10 miles square. The difficulty with the plan is the convolution required to carve out another state rather than return the land to VA and/or MD, and if essentially the Mall is sufficient to constitute a "seat of government". Like, if the Democrats want two more Senate seats why don't they just break California or some such into two states? It is not obvious that congress has that authority, not that that would inhibit them either.

To be precise not being under the control of a state, not just in a state.

And I suppose the fact that it would be unconstitutional is not the least bit inhibitory....
They have a right to vote like anyone else does; they just don't have any senatorial candidates on their ballots.
