I just realized something, almost like an epiphany. Red states like to kill people.

I used to be a big advocate of the death penalty.

Now due to the possibility (however slim) of an error, I would like to see it replaced with life in prison in solitary confinement. I've even worked out some cell designs where prisoners can be incarcerated economically for decades without ever seeing another human being.

Note, that American courts have repeatedly ruled that solitary confinement is constitutional.

I'll always be an advocate for the death penalty, but I would imagine that a lifelong term in solidary confinement would be quite a harsh life, especially if that prisoner has a bad case of claustrophobia.

Life in solitary is considered torture. It should be reserved for those who can't, for their safety or the safety of others, be housed in the general prison population. But I would give the option of assisted euthanasia for those who have life sentences without any hope of getting out, on a voluntary basis and always available at any time. It would come down to the prisoners choice of when they go. Assisted euthanasia is painless and less stressful than the death penalty. It's the same option that people with terminal disease can opt for in many countries, like Canada for exemple.

And your reply is nothing but hate-based partisan hyperbole with no real specific statement about what, exactly, you thing he's wrong about, along with your reasoning for thinking so, which might require some thoughtfulness on your part.

It is now a week out from the start of the massive Texas grid failure that has resulted in numerous deaths; millions of people plunged into darkness; scores of communities without clean water or heat in record cold temperatures; and billions of dollars in catastrophic damage to homes, businesses and the physical infrastructure that supports them. Critical questions surround the causes of this massive disaster and how to plan for the future so that a tragedy of this scale does not happen again.

At this point, there are many facts that Americans already know. Contrary to the spurious claims by Governor Greg Abbott as well as numerous right-wing politicians and pundits, freezing wind turbines and the state’s history of supporting renewable energy development did not cause the grid to fail.

Just about everybody in the civilized world. Humans are social by nature, deprive them of human interraction and they go crazy hence why it's considered torture.

I'd kind of agree with the torture thing- but I don't see the need to torture, I see the need to eliminate those who are violent murderers. Thus I advocate a quick, cheap execution of those where guilt confidence is 100%- they just don't get to play the game of life anymore. Over and done with. We don't throw 100K a year at extending their lives, and the survivors and families have closure.

In other words you have nothing. I looked it up. American courts have repeatedly held that solitary confinement IS CONSTITUTIONAL in the United States.

As far as I'm concerned that's all that matters. If they want to kill themselves in prison, that's their business.

But to make suicide difficult, they should serve their sentences naked.

I never said it wasn't constitutional, nor did I say I'm against it. But make no mistake solitary confinement can have a grave risk of major psychological harm.
I'd be for making it easier for inmates to kill themselves if they want to. But that's me.
