Seems a bit unlikely that either outcome effects you personally. How does it effect you one way or the other? Your wealth, health, happiness?

No, she was the sister of Earl Spencer. Full blue blooded arranged marriage.

Goes to show you what I know about the royal family. o_O For some reason I always thought part of her appeal was the fairy tale story of a commoner marrying a prince.

According to your Wiki article the Crown Estates bring in £211 million a year for the treasury. The Queen's personal income tax bill is over £5 million. That's less for me to fork out. Estimates are that over £2 billion comes into the country from tourism as a direct result of the Royal Family.
That's why I'm arguing that the amount paid to the Queen is not the right hill to die on.

Yes, that is exactly what I'm suggesting. Thanks for seeking clarification on it, much appreciated.

No, that's what both William and Harry did and their wives haven't necessarily benefitted from it, particularly amongst right wing journalists home and abroad.
Seems like arranged marriages are more acceptable than those based on love.

Perhaps the reaction to Harry doing it helps explain why no one else has.
He's gone from most popular after the Queen to most reviled apart from Andrew.

Yes, regarding the Crown Estate's net profits that's about right. As I mentioned earlier though, this includes profits from resources such as offshore energy production that have sweet f all to do with the Royals. The Queen doesn't have a personal income tax bill, does she? I thought that we'd already established that she makes voluntary income tax payments.

I haven't once argued that the Monarchy should be ended because of its financial cost and that is clear to you or anyone else that cares to take the time to read my contributions to this thread.

Now you argue that the Monarchy should be kept because of its personal benefit to you as a result of its contribution to the UK GDP, like a circus act. I would imagine this to be a bit of a shameful opinion among the staid philosophies used to argue in favor of the benefits of the Monarchy.

I've read that Princess Anne is very popular, and apparently for good reason. It has become a bit interesting reading about the Royals as part of my efforts to post somewhat informed opinions on this thread.

Funny, basic facts are really easy to obtain these days, and in my experience there is rarely enough impact from subtleties to shift the balance of the basics - on most any subject.

You're putting words in my mouth now. I've consistently argued that a monarch is better as the head of state than an elected or politically appointed one and that the cost is irrelevant when you look at the net financial benefit.

In this Harry/Meghan hoop-lah, the big deal has been that she is somewhat "black-ish".

Ha... in the year 2021, over 30% of everybody the entertainment industry and "news" media throws on your screen(s) is "blackish". So, who even cares anymore...?

Absolutely right about Anne. Whether she would have been the same if she'd had the pressures of being first in line, as she should have being the first born, is a different matter.

Not amongst the section of society which cares about skin colour and his wife's willingness to talk about injustice.

If it's entertainment you are after then try reading up on Princess Margaret, the Queen's younger sister. She was quite a character.

Too far my friend. Your words are yours alone and they are posted here for all to read.

    To which I replied,

I did not put words in your mouth my friend. You have consistently laced financial interests regarding the worth of the Monarchy into just about every single post you've made in this thread, and now you accuse me of putting words into your mouth. Well, perhaps I misunderstood or placed too much importance on the sequence of the discussion.

I think when the Queen dies we should get rid of them all, along with rest of the aristocracy. It was the only thing the French did properly. And nuke Eton while we're at it.

Oh come on. I've only talked about money as a response to everyone else's obsession with it. I mean, when I'm asked ''How does it effect you one way or the other? Your wealth, health, happiness?'' what am I supposed to?

Who would you have as head of state then?

Why not just go for, "Ah, yes, you're right mate, it really doesn't personally effect me one way of the other." That would be one option. You should take a breath and a moment to skim the thread. You'll not find many arguments in this thread favoring an end to the UK Royals because of financial concerns. There haven't really been all that many posts here even calling or predicting an end to the Monarchy.

I think you are bringing baggage from past discussions, here or elsewhere, by focusing on finances.

Personally, I find the social ramifications of royalty to be suffocating for the royals and for their subjects. WWI largely destroyed the entire concept and very few survived it. It is a moral evil in my opinion that should be ended. But, in reference to an earlier point we agreed to, there are several advantages to keeping it. Financial, and perhaps more importantly, there is some Romanticism of societal benefit associated with keeping the Monarchy.

It seems to me that you like the Romanticism of it, am I wrong?

I have little doubt that he will get kicked to the curb at some point and the little shrew will take him for every penny she can while simultaneously holding his children such that he has few rights or privileges.
Yep, sistah gurl is definitely that type.
