Actually they pay what is necessary to acquire good employees in a competitive environment. By sticking its nose into the free market, minimum wage gives employers an excuse to underpay people. It sets a standard. You can set a higher standard but that won't fix anything in the long run. You need to get rid of the minimum wage entirely and let the market do what it does far better than government.

If you'd like to be taken seriously, you'll need to stop pretending that just going about things like normal was ever a viable strategy during a global pandemic. That's not to say that lockdowns didn't hurt, or that the sporadic nature of lockdown laws across the various states that used them weren't problematic. But in every comment like yours, I never see any alternatives given. No other strategies except a direct or implied suggestion that a global pandemic shouldn't warrant changes in the way we go about things. Unfortunately that's a non-starter.

Of course it does. The general rule is that neither employers, nor government will treat employees ethically or fairly.

Government's interest is not ethical treatment. Government's interest is earning votes. Golem's vote is earned by screwing over Grandma. Government is fine with that.

Step one: Go on a tangent about volunteers.
    Step two: Get proven wrong.
Step three: Complain about off topic.

Employment is voluntary. All employees are volunteers. Some volunteers work for free. Some volunteers take a wage. That wage is a function of a value negotiation between employer and employee. You want to step in and regulate that negotiation in a way that ignores the actual value being negotiated over. You're not arguing to produce new value. You're arguing to destroy existing value, as any value below your minimum would become illegal to produce.

Or else what? Do you always investigate the books of the companies you do business with? What if it's the owner of the business? Are they allowed to make less than minimum wage?

So you're speaking for yourself then? Or did you "do your research" regarding the number of businesses I have run?

Because this is a big problem right? Those nasty businesses out there hiring subcontractors and then paying their workman's comp as if they were employees? How exactly does raising the minimum wage prevent a business from engaging in the horrid practice of treating a subcontractor like an employee?

It was a viable option. There was no reason to close anything down.

The alternative was to not close anything down to begin with. The lockdowns were not necessary.

There was no reason for the lockdowns. Lockdowns do not stop viruses.

The dog chasing his tail :) Cost more to produce, cost more to buy what's produced! Anyone that thinks retail and sellers of laborious goods is going to simply pay more to have it made and not raise their prices is as naive as they come ;)

Either that or has never ran a small business and always road the coattails of creative businessmen..

Yup called Life skills here, you call them up tell them what type of labor you need at what total pay is for the job and they show up! Granted not all jobs/projects are that unskilled but it is a way around min wage scales..

History has shown that employers as a general rule will not treat employees ethically or fairly unless they are forced to.

Nope doesn't change anything, employers as a general rule STILL will not treat employees ethically or fairly unless they are forced to.

    Do you understand wage competition?

If an individual can get paid what they agree to, and a competitor needs that employee, they will offer more in wages and/or bennies. The employee may or may not take that offer to their current employer, and either the employer meets or exceeds, or the employee leaves for the other employer.

No one is 'forced' to do anything. Employment at will.

If you call that being 'forced', then I guess that's what you call it. The rest of us who deal with it, call it wage competition.

    What the f.... hell?

I'm talking about the minimum wage.

YOU were the one who brought up volunteers.

YOU said: "Why can't someone volunteer to work for 10 dollars an hour?"
    http://www.politicalforum.com/index...ur-minimum-wage.585359/page-4#post-1072468887

The minimum wage is the topic of this thread. You need to pay more attention

Yep! And in your case it was easy. All I needed to do was read your post.

YOU brought up subcontractors. I'm talking about the minimum wage.

Who said it does? You're the only one saying that right here.

Another thing I can see without a need for much research is how you struggle to focus on a topic. It's hilarious how you make up an argument, and then you "forget" you were the one who brought it up and accuse ME of stating it. This thread alone this is like the.... fourth time you have done this.

You obviously don't know how that works either. Also, why should other people pay this guy for being a slug, unexperienced, or crappy employee? Not being worth $15/hr is not a disability.

Your definition of a sweat shop is distorted to say the least.
Bingo. That's why they will get let go.

So what do you call someone who volunteers to work for a company at an agreed upon price? Do you think that all paid people are forced to work for their employer?

Increasing minimum debases all. Other wages without significantly making anyone's life better and making many lives worse.

Rather than answer that question you decided to let me know that you don't know what volunteer means. After telling me that volunteers have to work for free or else someone gets into big trouble for treating them like employees, I easily proved you wrong. You could have simply answered the original question, rather than go on the path you took to embarrass yourself. I'll give you a chance to start over, since I'm a nice guy. Why can't someone volunteer to work for 10 dollars an hour? A 15 dollar minimum wage would make it illegal to do so, so I would like to hear a good reason that would justify this.

I did not bring up subcontractors. You should pay your research team less.

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt that you were focused on the topic of the thread. I'll revise my doubt and simply assume the parts of your post that aren't addressing the topic are word salad you're throwing up in the air in an attempt to obfuscate the fact that you can't support an argument in favor of a minimum wage.
