Sure, the "higher ups" may overrule engineers' plans.

Yeah, the governor in angry.

His government is responsible for oversight. Abbott says the state should investigate. What a croc! His administration is supposed to know what's going on.

He has plenty of time to get worked up over where people go to the bathroom, same-sex couples adopting children, and local police going light on pot smokers.

They don't care. Meeting needs and demands is not on their agenda, killing the status quo is in order to accelerate the process.

This is a pretty comprehensive review.
Texas “Wind was operating almost as well as expected” – Part Deux
    David Middleton
Guest “debunking the debunkers” by David Middleton Setting the Stage Why was Texas, ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) in particular, so unprepared for the onslaught of frigid weather? This…

". . . Orwellian efforts to exonerate wind & solar and place the blame on natural gas, coal and nuclear power are simply… Orwellian. Claiming that this is a “wake up call” for the United States to further degrade our energy infrastructure, because climate change is Orwellian on LSD and steroids . . ."

When you talk about your “power supplier”, to whom are you referring?

Is Arizona deregulated, or are you still forced to buy your power from a local monopoly that controls both power manufacture and distribution?

Sorry for the confusion. I’m in Nebraska. Arizona is capable of importing power to Nebraska. That’s the linkage between the two states. Nebraska, one of the most conservative red states has essentially socialized power. It’s one of our “progressive” policies like splitting electoral votes and having a non-partisan unicameral. :)

    Ask yourself this simple question.
DID ALL OF THE ENERGY SOURCES WORK in the areas that are being discussed.
Then try to surmise a real cognitive response.

Did the older systems fail because they couldn't handle the weather or did they fail because they had been neglected because the energy dollars and focus was elsewhere? There are a lot of questions about what happened, some of it was function and some was politics.

Mechanical failure is not ..political...it is economical. Totally based on where or what or where to spend capital.
It was made political by the those how failed to prepare.

Where maintenance money gets spent can be political. It's possible that it was just negligence on someone's part but it if we were focused on growing renewables then budgets might be cut on existing carbon plants. Budgets get cut the first slash is maintenance.

We had a similar thing here in the UK when we privatised water companies. The government allowed water companies to charge more to pay for increased infrastructure, but the newly privatised companies took the money and invested in China.
Good returns for their shareholders, major projects like reservoirs got delayed and delayed again.
They blamed planning issues, but investigation found the water companies response time to planning questions was measured in years.

Some things are not suitable for privatisation, especially where government sets the prices.

Glamor gets the cash. Just a short time ago we had collapsing bridges and old leaky dams in the headlines. Word was if we didn't fix our infrastructure we were going to see all of it fall apart. Two huge spending bills into Covid and not one mention of infrastructure.

Ain't that the way of things.
Our government has promised tax rises to pay the covid bill. Anything like that your side of the pond?

It's getting bad in Texas, that's for sure. But they'll tough it out and be better prepared next time.
