I am glad to hear that. Doctors need to be well rounded to deal with patients. Computer programmers not so much.

Mighty hard to have an opinion without context.

There's a lot of truth to this meme. A lot.

Anyway, let me tell this story again. I'm getting my eyes checked and started a chat with the receptionist, one thing lead to another and everything she said she had an advanced degree in history. More questions got her to tell me her specialty was WWII, Europe, specifically the successes and failures of the German resupply efforts. Now if someone is doing a documentary on WWII, her expertise might come in handy for a few moments, but so would the expertise of the people who taught her. Nice girl, smart girl, but she's an expert on something not many people will ever need.

No, there isn't. Philosophy degrees substantially raise your expected earnings.

That's why it's good to do a quick fact check before you post memes.

Yes, if you want to work in philosophy, there's a lot of competition for not many jobs.

If there's a lot of competition for just a few jobs then the meme proves my point, that is, unless I'm missing something with your post.

"Woke" type studies are pushing out the classic liberal education that taught students how to think, based on the sometimes ancient teachings that are the underpinnings of AngloSaxon/JudaeoChristian thought. Now its essays on "Who have you cancelled today."

Sadly, today students aren't being taught how to think, they're being taught what to think. Could you imagine today's generation going off to fight WWII?

What, like Plato, Aristotle, and other ancient thinkers you might read about in a Philosophy course?

Why are you making things up? Doesn't truth matter here?

In defense of 19crib, there does seem to be a daily race to see who can dig up something that's racist, sexist, insulting, offensive or whatever, just so they can take credit for cancelling it. The examples I'll give are cartoons, butter, syrup, flags, statues, movies, books, tv shows, the names of astronomical bodies and the like. In Philly they even cancelled bullet proof glass in high crime areas because it's somehow offensive.

Yes, there have been some people who have been authoritarian in trying to protect themselves and others from bad ideas. (Ironically, Plato would be fine with that, per se).

But the kids need more philosophy, not less. They need to learn to question their own orthodoxies.

They think there are bad ideas being promoted when they seek to ban something.

Bad idea? I've never seen anyone on the left try to cancel violent video games where the players all try to shoot each other and hack hookers to death with an axe, maybe those things aren't bad ideas. But that syrup logo has to go.

Then you haven't been paying attention. At all. To the extreme.

I think you should have a good look at what they are doing before commenting. There are genuine excesses worth complaining about, but you don't seem to have a good sense of what leftists are doing.

By the way, the idea behind getting rid of the syrup label, whether that should be done or not, is to combat the bad idea of racism. Surely, that's obvious.

That's the privilege mindset. She felt entitled to pursue a very particular personal passion, in spite of the fact that it will never pay her bills. That's the way aristocrats think. They think the rules of cause and effect don't apply to them, only to peasants.

"Going to fight wars is RAACIIST!" I can see them throwing a temper tantrum right in the middle of a bunch of bombs going off all around em.

INDEED! I've had the pleasure of working UNDER those whose degrees had NOTHING to do with the job they were hired to do....retirement has been a blessing from God.

They don't need the philosophical teachings of Malcom "X", Etc. We have enough problems with "Big Education" exploiting their hated of America on behalf of China.
But it makes for interesting conversation while you are mixing a $5 latte for a STEM graduate, while you are wondering how you will get the taxpayers to pay off your $50,000 student loan.

As a software engineer I certainly don't have patients, but I do try to understand what is needed, and that takes some patience. :)

"Big Education" would like to forget Malcolm X.

"Any time you throw your weight behind a political party that controls two-thirds of the government, and that party can't keep the promise that it made to you during election-time, and you're dumb enough to walk around continuing to identify yourself with that party, you're not only a chump but you're a traitor to your race. [applause]

What kind of alibi do come up with? They try and pass the buck to the Dixiecrats. Now, back during the days when you were blind, deaf and dumb, ignorant, politically immature, naturally you went along with that. But today, as your eyes come open, and you develop political maturity, you're able to see and think for yourself, and you can see that a Dixiecrat is nothing but a Democrat – in disguise. [applause]"
ESSENCE, "The Ballot or the Bullet" Malcolm X (1925 - 1965), King Solomon Baptist Church, Detroit, Michigan - April 12, 1964.

It isn't a degree (aside from some rare, specialty grad degrees in things like Human/Computer Interaction); it's a career path. And a pretty lucrative one. And, no, it isn't general studies. And, no, it can't easily be replaced with computer models.

I highly suggest The Design of Everyday Things if you want to learn more, or you can swing by a meeting of your local UXPA group. If you do, you'll probably encounter a lot of recruiters eagerly looking for UX professionals. The best way I can simplify it is that it centers around product design, most often in technology (though not always) and website design. I'm not sure if you've ever been to Disney World, but if you have done so recently, they have these "MagicBands." A single bracelet acts as your room key, your credit card while shopping or eating, your park pass, etc. It was the result of a massive UX effort by Disney. On a more serious note, there are UX professionals that work for NASA, aeronautics companies, and in the nuclear industry to design interactions that minimize costly, or sometimes lethal, mistakes by operators.
