United Airlines to open flight school later this year in hiring push, plans to increase diversity
The airlines took a serious hit after 9/11 and an even bigger one due to COVID. Now, they are getting back on track and moving ahead.

This announced plan is great for so many people that might not have ever had the opportunity to pursue aviation studies or work for a big name company. I wish them all great success in this venture.

    What do you think?

I would think Airlines could and should hire highly trained retired military pilots.

As with any job the most qualified should be hired. Skin color, light or dark, should not be a qualification.

The candidates have to pass and qualify to be hired.

As long as they are qualified and not just diversity hires...

I would hope they'd hire the best pilot for the job based on skill and experience and not their race or gender.

So do the firemen in NYC and soldiers in the Army, but when the women failed they lowered the standards.

I was looking at starting a career as a pilot using my GI bill when I left the Marine Corps back in 2000. Then 9/11 happened and I went right back into the military instead. If I was younger and not using my GI bill on earning a degree, I would jump in it now. I guess I'll just keep playing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and DCS instead, lol.

How are they going to be forced to apply?

How exactly, where they prevented from pursuing a flying career? Spell out the exactly mechanism, and tell us who was enforcing it.

What I think is that it's racist to predicate anything on skin tone, and just as racist to demand that brown people do work they clearly don't want to do.

I don’t give a squat about the color of the pilots skin or it’s a he/she/he she/she he/or any one of the other numerous sexes discovered in the last 10 years. All I want is the very best, the very best pilots with the very best training.
In the countless times Ive flown in my life I don’t know and don’t remember anything about the pilots skin color or the pilots sex, sexes. What I do remember is that so far every time I’ve come back home. Alive. And you lucky folks get to benefit from that.

Honestly, I'm not sure how to have a productive conversation with you. Your position is clear here and through other similar comments and I appreciate your having shown that. However, I have absolutely no interest in engaging in a race-based argument that will lead nowhere.

That's because at no time were any genders or minorities prevented from seeking a career as a pilot. It's good of you to bow out and try to put the blame on the poster who questioned this but we all see through this.

If that were the case, why would this international airliner spend millions trying to get more people of color into the mix? Do you think they determined that they don't want to be there or something else is holding them back?

Sorry, who has made this race-based? Let me just remind of the premise of your thread: Hiring "diversity".

Are you now claiming that doesn't involve race? It's your thread, it'd be nice if you could puruse your agenda for at least the first page.

Just answer the questions put to you. How will the brown people be compelled to pursue careers they clearly don't want?

Are you saying that this airline (and others similarly bent) think POC can't or shouldn't make choices for themselves, and so must be 'made to' take jobs they're not interested in?

I can't answer that question because the basis of your statement is incorrect.

How is it incorrect? Is this not a measure to 'obtain' more brown people?

    I didn't say anything, I asked a question -

Why would this international airliner spend millions trying to get more people of color into the mix? Do you think they determined that they don't want to be there or something else is holding them back?

    EDIT:
    Here's another -
This airport seems to have determined that this move is in their best interest, why do you care what a private company does with its money?

Your foregone conclusion is "careers they don't want" implying that they are not in those positions because they choose not to be.

Do you have any statistical data that shows black and brown people do not want to be pilots? If so, I'd be interested in reviewing it.

Nobody wants a diversity hire for a pilot. Apparently the way to avoid that now is to avoid United Airlines flights altogether.

What would be holding them back? The training is open to all races and genders.

The evidence is in the fact that they are NOT PILOTS. Since general education and subsequent aviation training are available to anyone sufficiently interested, then clearly there is a lack of desire to work towards that end. General education is free, but pilot school can be expensive. If people deem it not worth saving for, then clearly they don't want it much. THAT'S your evidence.

Next you'll try telling us that America needs more brown doctors, so more brown people should be made to do the hard yards involved, whether they want it or not. I use the doctor example ironically, because there are more brown people in medicine in America than white, in many places. And why do you think that is? It's not because they get a free pass, it's because they WANT to work in medicine, and thus are prepared to do what it takes.
