After witnessing one foreign policy disaster after another for the last 20 years, I find myself asking myself this very question. Two decades ago, I would have said that the US most certainly is a force for good, and stability, and that any criticisms of the US’s actions during the last 75 years was obviously rooted in anti-Americanism. I was a younger, and more naive individual then. After my first hand witnessing of the nightmare that was Iraq, I earnestly started questioning my own beliefs. By the end of WW2, America had a radically different standing in the world. There were only two super powers left standing. The conflict between two diametrically political views held the world hostage. The better system won out, but at what cost?
Marxism and its "revolution without borders" is fine... if Marxism lead to the type of workers' paradise it attempts to achieve. But instead, it leads to East Germany, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, and Pol Pot, whose forces murdered about 1 out of every 3 of his own citizens. The US was a curb on this evil. But so much today is about squandering US blood and treasure for dubious reasons while pissing the rest of the world off at us. For that reason, I am a relative isolationist. Bring our boys home.
I am not sure I can say we ever were. We did not do things around the world out of the goodness of our hearts, but out of what was in it for us.
Its a slippery slope when a nation proclaims itself to be 'the greatest nation in the world' and wants to bring their values to other countries. When one puts themselves forward as the example to follow, one should be sure to have on clean underwear (so to speak). The US, certainly, demonstrates many values that are great. But to make a blanket statement that the US is great is foolhardy. It isn't - not for everyone. And not all the time. As for being a force for good in the world, I would say it is more good than bad - but we have a long way to go at home before we can credibly 'lead'.
I voted yes with the coveat not with the current administration it seems. Then I would ask if not us then who?
and then those the are for good can stand up to them as a whole. Every other country that claims to stand for "good". We are sitting at 29 trillion dollars in debt and rising, we just cannot do it anymore and survive as a country. Every empire eventually stops ruling the world, our time has passed and now we need to learn to live with it like the others have
What do you think we've been doing. Afghanistan was a NATO operation. And defense and national security are the TOP priority for the federal government and they must be fully funded before we spend a dime on anything else so go but that 29 trillion elsewhere. How about we start by not paying people to not work? The United States does not rule the world that is a totally asinine and fallacious statement
. The US government now pomotes the most vile antichrist evil abominations inside its own country and around the world. .
Where are all the troops from the other 29 countries? Could they not even provide 3000 to replace the last few we took out? We do not need to police the entire world to defend our country. As much as any other empire in the past.
"Good" is a relative term. I am positive the people of the areas where we "spread our good" might have a different opinion. We need to stop minding everybody else's business and tend to our own nation and people.
Yeah, tell that to the victims of Operation Gladio, Operation Keelhaul, or the billions of Chinese who were betrayed into communist hands, etc... As for the Brits, yikes, lol... what were the circumstances under which Hong Kong came under British control?? Opium anyone?? The victors write the history... take it with a grain of salt.
Another poorly worded (if not plain stupid survey question) demanding people to adopt a strictly binary position on what any reasonable person can see is in fact a very complex topic with lots of possible variables and perspectives.
Incongruity between OP title and poll question... The United States is a force for good in the world (overall... we're also a source of great and increasing evil). The United States Government otoh, well its both too, but more evil, imo, than good.
Yeah, that’s why I added the option “It’s complicated”. Maybe more reading, and less shade throwing. That way you prevent embarrassing yourself.
May I suggest that instead of adding 'its complicated' as an option the better strategy would be to broaden the question. For instance, even adding the words 'on balance' at the start of the question would go a long way to making it easier to answer. The problem with the question is that its too black and white. 'Is the US a force for good in the world? Partly that depends on how you define 'good'. But there's also the question of do you mean in all parts of the globe, all the time? Also what sort of good? i.e. economic, political, social, environment? The list goes on. Quite often the US is a force for good using some of those metrics, other times, not so much. Point is though no other nation is really in a position to say they did better, are they?
Gladly! Neither we nor the yanks were perfect but we were the greatest force for good in history. When you see the pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong waving the Union flag that is our true legacy.
Where are they? Trying to get their people out, which we are not doing, after Biden without any consultations pulled out the air support and intelligence allowing the Taliban to take over. Where are they, speaking in public AGAINST Biden. You think we exist in a vaccum? What other country do we rule? What countries are part of the US empire you claim exist? How much tribute do we get from them?
