Where I am from in the North, if there is a group of men and women, somebody would say "what are you guys doing?", which is clearly grammatically incorrect by virtue of the group including women. In the South they would say "what are y'all (you all) doing?" which is in fact grammatically correct. As goofy as "y'all" sounds, I have to admit that it actually is a far more proper statement than "you guys". Be careful whom you call village idiots, as the term may be more applicable to you and your dialect.

You know what’s funny about this? Ignorance. The southern accent and many of the words are derived from Africa and the Gullah language. In the south the young were often raised by Africans and that influenced the dialect. For instance poke as in poke salad is an African word for bag. So in effect the article is denigrating the African influence of English.
There are different dialects across the country, and each has certain words that sound goofy to the others. So I suppose we are all village idiots.
Many languages have plural versions of "you" that differentiate from the singular version. Why shouldn't English? Y'all, Yous, or dofferntiating "you" and "thou"... Why not? Cac Ban (Vietnamese), Vous (French), etc. Why shouldn't we do the same in English?
