The concern about the American "empire" has to do with economics and politics.

In fact, our military supremacy depends on our economic strength.

As China and others achieve multiples of our GDP, as they most certainly will, they will also have all the military power we have, and more. They will also have the power to set the global rules on issues we have stated in our founding documents.

And, they will have more to offer those whom they want as allies against us.

Our chance is to remain economically important, to gather enough allies to resist the demands of those who would pit themselves against us economically, and to establish the fairness, the systems of representation, and other principles we believe in, so that those issues aren't resolved by China and any others intent on opposing our principles as they gain economic superiority.

That has very little to do with our military. It has to do with strengthening institutions that share our principles, such as the UN. And, it has to do with trade agreements such as the Pacific trade agreement canceled by Trump, thereby extending our economic influence beyond what is justified by us being a mere 5% of the world.

Being an "Empire" was never an American goal.

China is winning. America doesn't produce **** anymore. We're too busy living in the past, getting fat and lazy....and doing the dumbest PC woke crap possible.

Hell there are hundreds of thousands of new cars and trucks sitting in storage lots, fields and what not that can't be delivered because they lack rudimentary chips. We can't even make the crappy chips, much less the ones that run your phones.

The American Empire is dying? Good. Then we can cut our military budget in half, which still would leave us spending more than Russia and China COMBINED, and invest in our own country. Let. It. Die.

Demicrats have been control of one or both houses of congress for most of the last ninety years. Congress controls the purse... Guess who is responsible for most of the really bad and damage economic crap over the last 90 years. It ain't the president

Traditionally, empire refers to territory conquered and controlled outside your own borders.

Republicans are locking in newly gerrymandered maps for the legislatures in four battleground states that are set to secure the party’s control in the statehouse chambers over the next decade, fortifying the G.O.P. against even the most sweeping potential Democratic wave elections.

In Texas, North Carolina, Ohio and Georgia, Republican state lawmakers have either created supermajorities capable of overriding a governor’s veto or whittled down competitive districts so significantly that Republicans’ advantage is virtually impenetrable — leaving voters in narrowly divided states powerless to change the leadership of their legislatures.

Although much of the attention on this year’s redistricting process has focused on gerrymandered congressional maps, the new maps being drafted in state legislatures have been just as distorted.

And statehouses have taken on towering importance: With the federal government gridlocked, these legislatures now serve as the country’s policy laboratory, crafting bills on abortion, guns, voting restrictions and other issues that shape the national political debate.

Wisconsin Republicans are pushing to seize total control of elections in the state, even calling for criminal charges against state election commissioners while stoking conspiracy theories about former President Donald Trump's electoral defeat.

The most powerful Republican state lawmaker is backing calls to charge members of the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC), which was actually created by the GOP-led legislature just five years ago — and this comes in response to an investigation that turned up no evidence of voter fraud. A Republican member of the state Assembly's Constitution and Ethics committee wants to decertify last year's election results. And U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, a Republican and Trump loyalist, is calling for state lawmakers to stage a complete takeover of elections.

The Republican proposals are a "blatantly partisan and coordinated attempt to baselessly challenge the integrity of democracy in our great state," WEC administrator Meagan Wolfe, the state's top election official, said in a statement.

Repubs are increasingly becoming a party leaning in to authoritarian means of control.

Aren't the democrats the ones who keep pushing the mandates? Mandates for vaccines. Mandates for health insurance, etc.

That is so misleading that it is tiring. The US spends more on defense because we pay more for the same piece of equipment and pay our servicemen more. If we bought Chinese equipment for the price the Chinese pay and paid our servicemen the same as the Chinese, we would have a small defense budget than China.

America used to create weapons to fight wars. Since WWII, we create wars to sell weapons. That kind of outsized military spending at the expense of domestic issues was a major factor in the collapse of the Soviet Union. We're next...

What about Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the US Virgin Islands. Should these outside-the-US territories be granted independence to end our scourge of imperialism?

Driven by corporate greed our companies voluntarily sent our manufacturing offshore to wherever they could find the cheapest labor and now it is coming back on very expensive ships to haunt us???? We have been our own worst enemy. Our military has been in steady decline ever since we ended the draft.
