    * Nostalgia: In a nod to the 1970s, eat only on even days.

    * Have it your way: At fast food restaurants, ask for extra ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise packets with every order.

    * Lower Caloric Intake: Divide one can of SpaghettiOs into equal portions to feed your entire family.

    * Free Meals: Register for investment seminars to get a free lunch or dinner.

    * Clearance Items: Ask if your dollar store (make that your "Dollar and a Quarter Store") has a clearance section.

    * 31 Samples: Ask to taste all 31 Baskin-Robbin flavors.

    * Sanitizer Wipes: Many stores have sanitary wipes at entrances; grab a few dozen on your way out.

    * Celebrate at Costco: Hold your child's birthday party at the Costco food court--everyone gets one hot dog and drink.

I was a meteorologist for twenty years in the Air Force. I have heard that same question numerous times. "Why not drop a nuke in the middle of a hurricane?" It is not a stupid question. Breaking up the flow of air or disrupting the ocean surface might be enough to downgrade a hurricane. The problem is that it is risky. It might also cause it to intensify or result in dropping radioactive material on land.

Questions like that is how great things are accomplished. Maybe that particular question was a bad idea, but there is no harm in asking. I would rather a leader ask than keep silent because he is afraid of criticism.

As far as your education pyramid goes, education is a poor indication of common sense. Some of the most ignorant people I know have PHDs and some of the smartest are only high school graduates. A degree does not magically bring on common sense. All too often that degree limits their ability to think outside the box.

Remember canned Cat and dog food is nutritional, and really good on dumpster saltines.. I remember retired old peeps in Cali living on them in the 70s :)

Too true. As an MBA leading a team of applied physics and electromechanical PhDs, I often find myself wondering how some of these people function out in the real world. They are brilliant in their respective disciplines, but as much as I try to encourage them to leave their silo, it's like trying to empty Lake Superior with a teaspoon.

That said, I remeber Trump's comment about nuking a hurricane. He tends not to think things all the way through - as in spreading nuclear fallout accelerated by hurricane-force winds might not be the best idea. But I've often wondered about the effect of a thermobaric weapon on a hurricane. Has anyone modeled this? Just a basic white man thinking out of the box. :rock_slayer:

No. You listen to the person who knows what he talking about. It may or may not be the PHD or the high school graduate.

When it comes to complex scientific issues, I'm going to give the opinion of someone with a PhD in that particular field a helluva lot more weight than Bubba. That's common sense.

It is not common sense to listen blindly to someone just because he has a PHD.

I don't listen blindly to anyone - even people I personally trust. Would you give more weight to the hurricane season forecast from the degreed meteorologists at NOAA, or to the forecast that the waitress at Denny's, who graduated high school by the skin of her teeth, would give you with your Grand Slam and coffee?

I agree totally with this post. Besides, there is absolutely no epidemiological evidence (I didn't post propaganda) too much CO2 in the atmosphere causes imminent climate change catastrophe.

EDIT: There's also the suggestion of causing a volcano to erupt which will cool the earth for years while the volcanic eruption causes some sort of nuclear winter.due to the volcano's eruption clogging the atmosphere.

I listen to the person who makes the most sense. Learn to think for yourself. Don't be overly impressed by the degrees or number of degrees. Like I said earlier, all too many times they are not capable of thinking outside of the box they were educated in. Bow to the Robots said the same thing in #8 above.

Earlier I said something to the effect that some of the PHDs I have met were the most ignorant people I have ever met. On the other hand, the smartest person I have ever known was a PHD.

And how clueless were those PhDs within their field of accreditation?

You can continue to make excuses for them, but a PHD only means they finished a field of study. It does not guarantee common sense.

"Common sense" is the methodology for making hurricane season forecasts? 1584414801.3623-smiley.gif

Common sense would certainly be a factor.

For example, you might do some kind of correlation. What events in the past corresponded to other events in the past. For example an extremely warm sea in a specific area might correlate with an active hurricane season. Common sense says that might have value as a predictor.

In doing the correlation, they might find that Wooly Worms in Arkansas also correlated in the past. Common sense says that is not likely a good predictor.

And would you expect Trixie at Denny's to do a better job of sorting predictors of a hurricane season than a degreed meteorologist with, say, twenty years on the job?

    -or-

Would you expect a degreed meteorologist with, say, twenty years on the job to be able to juggle 10+ tables and 30+ customers in his/her section during the church rush like Trixie at Denny's?

I don't expect that waitress to forecast the weather or that degreed meteorologist to wait tables. That is also part of common sense.

Exactly. I don't care if that meteorologist/PhD is Rain Man outside of his field of expertise. If what he says within his field has passed peer review in the past, I'm going to give more weight to that. That's common sense, and you damn well know it.

But that completely misses the point.

There are a number of specialties within the meteorological fields as in most professional fields. That PHD after their name does not guarantee that they have common sense or the ability to think outside their narrow field of interest. All too often, when faced with a problem in a field slightly out their field of interest, they can only think in terms of their specialty.
