    Well, the one case in Belgium was in a traveler, not community transmission. But like I said, hopes of stopping the spread are quite futile. But containment measures can gain some time.

    One hour ago; UK confirms first two cases of Omicron Covid19, and both linked to travel from South Africa.

    And Amsterdam had 61 positive passengers coming from South Africa; these 61 cases are quarantined and their samples are being tested to see if it's Omicron.

    Seems like this thing will spread easily. It's probably already too late for containment.

    Pfizer and BioNTech said they can rework their vaccine in 100 days to catch the new variant. But 100 days is a long time... not to forget, that's just to get a new vaccine ready; then there is approval, production, distribution...

    Some people here were repeatedly saying that the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic was "so last year" and a couple of posters mocked me when I said I've seen this misguided optimism before, every time a wave fades. It's been 5 times already that people declared the pandemic to be over, just to see another surge. I said, "that, if the virus doesn't throw us another curve ball." While it is not yet confirmed if Omicron is this curve ball, it is sure looking this way.

    This is not over, and most likely we're headed to a protracted, chronic battle against this virus, with surges coming up seasonally and with the need to update vaccines. I still have the hope that oral antivirals will be the ultimate solution.

    Please do keep us all informed here in the Forum, Dr. Center. I trust your opinions more than those of Fauci, Tedros, and Walenski all put together....

    In another thread, I posted the following math and rationale;

    South Africa “Primary” International Airport; O.R Tambo International

    Annual number of international paid passengers; 9.2 million, average daily, 25,000, over two weeks, 350,000

    Headline, The Guardian; Up to 22,000 may have flown directly to or from South Africa to the UK in the past two weeks since the Variant was first identified, (two days ago).

    AP Report; from just over 200 new confirmed cases per day in recent weeks, South Africa saw the number of new daily cases rocket to 2,465 on Thursday.

    Rationale; Over the last two weeks, less than 10% of Tambo’s international paid passengers may have flown directly to or from South Africa to the UK

    Question; What about the other +90%??????

    Conclusion; Most likely, and despite the flight bans that were recently imposed by many nations, Omicron has already been spread all over the world.

    Strange. I really don't see why you say that when this originated in a place with some of the lowest vaccinations... I think only around 25%

    Has anyone got a link to the stats for this variant listing infections, hospitalisation and deaths with links to whether vaccinated or not?

    South Africa is not seeing a rapid rise in cases or deaths and very few are vaccinated.

    I have got to the point that we need to get back to normal behaviour. Our economy is being hit too hard and could take decades to recover if further lock downs are introduced

    It’s my understanding we are “assuming” it will be “bad” based on the number of mutations. I would like to see data before getting all worked up as well.

    More fear mongering. Africa and the WHO say its not particularly bad and has only produced mild symptoms.

    Please explain why Florida’s Delta Case Fatality Rate is approx. 400% higher than UK’s Delta CFR?

    The super fraud variant is the next opportunity for the traitors to shut us down and off us and bilk us.

    We need to fight and resist.

    Your brain doesn’t process and analyze data like my brain does, for example;

    Back in early July, guys like you were chanting, based on UK’s statistics, that the Delta Variant was less deadly that original Covid, and other Variants, HOWEVER, here are three important facts you’ve ignored;

    1. Compared to the UK, U.S. ranks very high for obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, and said comorbidites aren’t a good mix with Covid.

    2. Back then, UK’s high percentage of vaccination rates.

    3. Florida has a high percentage of Seniors

    And for your info, Florida’s Delta CFR, near at par with original Covid, and currently at 1.65%, thus, less deadly????????

    What is problematic about Africa is the high rate of aids. As you know, it is a immune compromising disease.

    Simply put: This lets the virus du jure, Corona virus, mutate within these patients. A healthy body’s immune system fights each and every mutation to the death until one has all the markers necessary to get a head start and make the body ill and be transmissible.
    A immuno-compromised patient is like a human virus lab, letting the mutations run rampant in a weak immune system. Thus, we have an ample supply escaping these people that will be “tested” in the healthy population.

    What specific things do you need to feel like we are back to normal?

    I still have to wear shoes.... err, a mask, in businesses that require it, which is their right. Other than that, though, it's been business as usual for us for well over a year.

    To be back to "normal" means no flights cancelled. No lockdowns, which are occurring in Europe. Wearing masks or not is not important in my definition of normal

    I agree. Cases have been reported now in Italy and Germany.

    Our travel ban here in the United States only starts tomorrow, so, a lot of people must have traveled here from these countries, on Friday, Saturday and today.

    Plus, our "ban" is a restriction rather than a ban, the SAME mistake made by the Trump Administration at the very beginning of the pandemic regarding flights from China. US Citizens and Permanent Residents are exempt. Well, the virus doesn't discriminate by citizenship, so our citizens and permanent residents will seed the variant here, given that this restriction does NOT come with beefed up quarantine requirements; again, the SAME error made by the previous administration.

    If there is a very concerning variant and you are serious about stopping it, you need to have a law-enforcement-guaranteed quarantine (and yes, there is legislation that supports it, and courts have sided with the CDC on this, at the time of Ebola; the CDC actually has police powers duly granted by Congress to force a citizen into quarantine if it is deemed a national security issue). So, sure, we need to get our citizens and permanent residents back home, but then, they must quarantine, in a verifiable, tightly enforced way. When you don't do that, these travel restrictions are a joke. They don't stop anything. They may stop a South African national from coming here, but won't stop an infected American from bringing in the variant. Both the Trump and the Biden administration did not have the courage of implementing a tough quarantine requirement, afraid of the repercussions from the ACLU, protests, etc., (which would fail; like I said there is legal substract for it, but the PR would be bad). So, these restrictions accomplish nothing.

    The other problem is what you said. Once a variant is DETECTED, it has already been going around in a community. So, likely many South Africans or tourists visiting South Africa have already brought in the variant even before it was detected, sequenced, and declared a variant of concern.

    ----------------

    Now, a piece of good news is that in Israel, they said that vaccinated people who caught this Omicron variant had VERY mild cases. Some sniffles. So maybe this variant is scary in terms of number of mutations, but will actually not be scary in terms of severity of illness. We'll see.

    Just a piece of nitpicking: du jour, not du jure. But you are right. Omicron is thought to have originated in an AIDS patient that had long Covid.
