You'd probably have to ask somebody responsible for making that decision in Texas.

Just know that an unsecured gun is only a small part, if ANY part, of the charges in Michigan

I don't know if that's what "set him off", but I'm pretty sure that meeting is the key to the charges against the parents... They had 2 chances to do the right thing then and there, and failed...

I've been searching in vain for the actual indictments, but no joy... I can always find federal indictments, but have less luck in state courts... Also, it's pretty soon... they may not be posted yet...

I suspect the kid either talked to the cops (hopefully spontaneously) or the kid talked to a witness, who spoke to the cops, about the unlocked gun. But as has been pointed out, the containment of the gun isn't much of the issue in Michigan,as it's perfectly legal not to do so..

Here's one of the better summary articles

Ammo search.. discovered in school... I have to hope/assume whoever did the Tuesday meeting knew about it.

    SNIP
The day before the attack, an Oxford High teacher had “observed Ethan searching ammunition on his cellphone during class,” according to McDonald—a common warning behavior in school shooting cases. That prompted attempts by worried school officials to contact his parents via phone and email; the school got no response from the Crumbleys, said McDonald.
    ENDSNIP

Drawing - unknown how discovered, but it could be a teacher walking around the room OR a student flagging the teacher down (unlikely)

    SNIP
By the morning of the shooting, graphically violent images Ethan had drawn in class prompted school officials to convene an urgent meeting with the Crumbleys and their son at the school.
    ENDSNIP

In custody? No, he was in a meeting in the school offices... wasn't remotely in custody (depending on your definition of custody)

    SNIP
They left the high school, refusing a recommendation to take Ethan with them, according to McDonald. “He was returned to the classroom,” she said.
    ENDSNIP

Your paragraph I bolded will probably become the key issue in this case... What could the school have done here? If it doesn't involve him being OFF campus immediately, it's woefully insufficient...

EB, you are being quite generous there. I can think of about 100 things they failed to do as parents off the top of my head. This isn't a snapshot of a functional family. These last two failures are just part of the dysfunctional that's obviously been there from jump street or at least it went off the rails long before this shooting took place.
That's promising. I don't believe it's right that the public can opine on open cases that might influence all the people involved in the case. Hopefully, most of it will stay under wraps until it gets before the courts.
I haven't been an LEO for decades and it's been awhile since I was a child abuse advocate and studied law but I would be shocked if the police tried to speak to him without his parent(s) and/or attorney present. That's usually a reason to dismiss any evidence pertained from those conversations. I doubt the cops dropped the ball on that this early in the process.

However, if the shooter talked to someone else and that person (presumably another minor) talked to the police with a parent(s), guardian or attorney present, it doesn't taint that information and can be admitted. Obviously, if he told an adult that, they have the right to speak to the police about what they know.

I'm not going to speak to their suspect parenting before the Tuesday meeting... Buying a 15 yo a handgun with target lessons may not be my particular cup of tea, but that's not the main story here. I'm sure the bulk of the case revolves around that meeting...

Posting indictments online is pretty standard... I'd be stunned if they weren't available before midweek.

As you can see, just like with rittenhouse, the left wing vultures are dying to sink their claws in before hearing the facts

That's really strange. I don't see how anyone using a phone could not be aware that someone else was looking at what they were doing. Unless he had his screen size 2+ times bigger than the standard, that sounds fishy (to me, anyway).
I don't gamble, but if I had to take a bet on this one, I would say the school has some kind of policy for lawful entry into a student's locker and backpack and the cell phone search caused them to be concerned and they opened his locker or backpack.

It just doesn't make sense that he would be openly drawing something like that because that is not something a kid would want anyone else to see. The only alternative is he could possibly be certifiable insane in which his brain would not process that kind of thing *should* be hidden.
I don't think I'm understanding this correctly. Are you saying his parents left him at school and fled right then?

What did they plan to do when school was let out? If that is what your describing, I don't see how they can't be charged with some kind of rule under "neglect" or even "endangerment". That's preposterous.
    That it is.

As I understand it, they left him at school, heard about the shootings a few hours later, both then made actions that indicated they suspected their son was involved, then fled sometime that afternoon/evening...

    SNIP
As news started to break, the investigators said James and Jennifer both took actions that indicate they knew something could have happened, McDonald said.

At 1:22 p.m., 30 minutes after the first 911 call was placed, Willis stated that Jennifer texted her son the following: "Ethan don't do it".

At 1:37 p.m., Willis said that James went home and searched for his Sig Sauer and then called 911 to report the missing gun. On the 911 call, he said he believed his son was the shooter.

Well, you can probably understand how the prosecutor (and mother of 5) felt immediately before deciding to charge.... even if these parents escape conviction (distinct possibility), their historically bad parenting, and concern for society at large, will be there for all to see...

I don't know if these 2 doofuses have other children (hard to imagine if they are willing and able to bolt), but this is the sort of case that makes me wish society had a nice way to prevent that...

The one thing in this timeline I'm currently having trouble with is the timing and purpose of the Tuesday meeting.

I've seen it was scheduled for 10AM, but the reports are the disturbing picture was found that AM.... I'm finding it hard to believe a picture could be found and a meeting, with both parents attending, could be setup and happen within the hour (I'm assuming HS starts at 9am, which it did for my son in VA last year).

In that case, was the meeting setup on Monday, due to the ammo search story from the day before??

I'd like to know when the meeting was setup and what was the actual reason given to the parents.

It likely says something like - "Distract from this case to a black school shooter with too many different circumstances to count"

Someone suggested getting the security to detain him and check his backpack but I am betting if they had tried that these parents would have gone ballistic over his “rights”

    Give me a freaking break...:bored:

Why post the Same BS (that has been destroyed several times already)?

    Totally different situation.
    Get real!
Not even on the same planet.

    Better luck next time.:bored:

I can't believe that you even posted that.

That misguided comparison was utterly destroyed days ago...

    Totally, EB.
What an Utterly Misguided Attempt at "Equivalency".
"2+2=5" would have made more sense.

I do have to agree, if the parents are guilty, so is the school, they put him in the classroom

though I think both did not know what this child would do at the time, hindsight is 20\20

Have you seriously thought about the message this is sending to other potential school shooters? How many might rethink if they know their parents will be locked up?

See post #87... what other options does a school have here? All I can think of is office detention the rest of the day (perhaps office detention every day afterwards until he goes through the recommended counselling and passes)

I don't think the school gets a total pass here, but the parents had BIGLY pertinent information the school likely didn't....

You can't tell me what to do. I didn't ask for more links. I asked you to state your case. Why should I read what you think is relevant to your position? You can articulate it yourself. If not, then it's not really your position, it's someone else's and there is no need for further comment.

My guess?? None.... Anybody willing to shoot fellow students randomly doesn't really care about much else besides themself...
