Greece Puts Coal Power Plants Shut Down in 2019 Back Into Operation…To Avert Winter Blackouts!

Greek green follies fail…a U-turn back to coal

Until recently, Greece was one of the largest operators of lignite-fired power plants in Europe, but in 2019 the new government took on the goal of shutting down all coal-fired power plants by 2023 and going green by 2030.

But that has turned out to be easier said than done. Greece now is putting lignite-fired power plants back into operation after a recent study by Greek electricity regulator RAE found the supply was at risk, especially in the cold winter months – due to the lack of reliable baseload power supply. . . .

    1) There is nowhere near enough space and resources to keep eight billion at the standard we think we're entitled to. FFS, we still think it's perfectly okay for people to live alone .. taking up the space and resources that in other spheres could shelter ten. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

    2) Stop with the Star Trek.

You mean move away from profligacies like living alone, and travelling?

No one gets out of this with clean hands - least of all those who bleat the loudest while doing nothing.

There is ample room for ten times the population we currently have. Fly over the US someday. It’s 90% open space. I live about 45 minutes from downtown LA. I can see open space from Tehachipi to Barstow....There is plenty of space on this planet. WTF should we cram ten people into a space? Get a friggin grip.

EIGHT BILLION, remember. And apparently you think they should all be able to live alone, in individual fully fitted out homes. First World sized kitchens and bathrooms - which would serve dozens in the Third World - serving just ONE person. Climate control, building materials, land used, power consumed, etc etc ... all to shelter ONE person.

With respect, you have not done the math. The only way we can ever have global 'equality', is if we First Worlders have a much MUCH lower standard of living.

I agree. Sustainability is BS. A bandaid and salve, designed purely to allow us to continue with our progligacy.

And that right there is exactly why we are where we are.

First Worlders declaring their entitlement to an un-grim life.

The idea is to bring the third world people up, not to drag us down...I do not feel any “sense of entitlement”. I came into the world living in a small three bedroom house with 4 brothers and 4 sisters and we were all grateful for how our father and mother worked to feed, clothe and shelter us. From there, we all learned what was possible here in America and worked towards building the futures we wanted for our own families. “We are where we are” because we projected our futures and worked towards that goal. The great thing about this country is that with hard work, a little luck and a positive attitude, we can achieve our dreams.

Of COURSE it is. Because it's about preserving your own privilege and comfort, right?

Not an ounce of self-awareness here. No wonder the planet is ****ed.

    Greta would agree with you.

I'm more about the middle path, rather than cynicism and just giving up. There's definitely a 'market' for sustainability.

Why do you think Greta is a cynic and/or giving up?

No there isn't. It's a guilt bandaid. Our profligacy is the problem, not the flavour of the resources we gobble.

You overlook the reason WHY there are those 90% open space still that way it is too far from water, power and requires building materials that must be brought in the power lines and underground piping and a lot more.

Then there is a shrinking pool of potable water for consumption and irrigation the large aquifers that are powering parts of the American West are being pumped deeper and deeper as the water level sinks lower and lower.

You also don't consider that human beings don't live in large cities well it is where the vast majority problems are generated the gangs the drug culture the awful metal music and crap (rap) music

The oceans food supply has been shrinking for years now the quotas are getting more restrictive as well you are way too optimistic since creating cities far from potable water and power generation is a recipe for failure.

I agree that profligacy is part of the problem.

Dude, living the first world middle-class life is not PART of the problem - it's the ENTIRE problem.

    Nonsense.
“This is my long-run forecast in brief:

The material conditions of life will continue to get better for most people, in most countries, most of the time, indefinitely. Within a century or two, all nations and most of humanity will be at or above today's Western living standards.

I also speculate, however, that many people will continue to think and say that the conditions of life are getting worse.”

When you mash all the air-bubbles and hysteria out of this thing, what we need is HYDROGEN FUSION! I've said that hundreds of times here for YEARS....

Everybody, Left and Right, wants to put all the available R&D money into everything else. Why, when hydrogen fusion is the only long-range solution that makes any SENSE?! :frustrated:

    Stop living like that, obviously.

And I take it by 'practical', you mean comfortable. No surprise there.

Hey everybody, Crank says to stop living how you're living and be uncomfortable. It will save the planet, apparently. Anyone want to do that?
